COVID-19 in Northeast India is making a worrying comeback, with several states witnessing a surge in daily infections, hospitalizations, and fatalities. Health officials are scrambling to contain new clusters as active cases rise in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, highlighting the region’s vulnerability in the ongoing global fight against the virus.

Assam Leads Northeast India COVID-19 Spike

Assam has reported over 2,100 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours alone. The Kamrup Metro district remains the hardest hit, with 226 new infections recorded. The state health department has ramped up testing and vaccination efforts, deploying 2,000 special vaccination teams across key zones.

“We’re seeing a sharp rise in cases after several months of stability,” said Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta. “People must follow safety protocols again.”

Assam’s Positivity Rate Rises

The current positivity rate stands at 2.16%, a significant increase from below 1% in April. Hospitals in Guwahati have begun reopening dedicated COVID-19 wards in preparation for a potential wave.

Manipur Confirms First Major Cluster

Manipur has confirmed a new cluster outbreak after a 23-year-old student tested positive. Within 48 hours, the state recorded 459 new cases and 16 deaths.

Mass testing has resumed in Imphal West and Kangpokpi, and shopkeepers are now required to provide COVID-free certificates to continue business operations.

“We’re treating this as a serious early warning,” said Dr. L. Ramesh, head of the COVID Task Force in Manipur.

Meghalaya Sees Surge in East Khasi Hills

Meghalaya reported 403 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths, with most infections concentrated in East Khasi Hills. The district administration has enforced strict mask mandates and banned large gatherings.

Shops are now only allowed to reopen if their staff are vaccinated by June 24.

“We’re prioritizing vaccinations and rapid testing,” said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Nagaland and Tripura Monitor Situation Closely

While Nagaland hasn’t reported a dramatic surge yet, it remains on alert due to low vaccination coverage in rural areas. As of March 2025, the state had recorded 782 COVID-related deaths.

Tripura, which had previously reported zero active cases, now prepares for a resurgence. Local authorities are reactivating isolation wards and preparing public awareness campaigns.

Public Health Response: Testing, Vaccination & Curbs

All affected states are focusing on:

  • Mass testing in containment zones
  • Vaccination drives in rural and urban centers
  • Awareness campaigns in schools, markets, and religious sites

The Union Health Ministry has urged Northeast states to ensure that health infrastructure—including oxygen supply and ICU beds—is ready to handle a surge. Read their guidelines at mohfw.gov.in.

The resurgence of COVID-19 in Northeast India shows that the pandemic is far from over. Local leaders, healthcare workers, and citizens must act together to prevent another devastating wave.
