Sandipan Garg bail marks a significant development in the investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s death, as the suspended Assam Police officer walked out of Nikashi Jail in Baksa district on October 19. The Gauhati High Court granted him bail on October 16, offering relief to one of the accused in the high-profile case.

Sandipan, a cousin of the late Assamese music icon, faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. However, his release does not end the legal proceedings or determine his guilt. The investigation and trial surrounding the singer’s death continue to draw considerable attention across Assam.

Sandipan Garg bail: What happened in court?

The Gauhati High Court granted bail to Sandipan Garg on October 16, following a hearing on his petition. Justice Rajesh Mazumdar, sitting on a single-judge bench, passed the order. Senior advocate Anan Kumar Bhuyan represented Garg during the proceedings.

Initially, Garg’s release faced a delay because of the Durga Puja holidays and pending formalities. However, he walked out of Nikashi Jail on October 19 after completing the required procedures.

Following his release, Garg expressed faith in the legal process. He reportedly said, “Truth always triumphs.” His release represents a new development in a case that has remained under close public scrutiny since the singer’s death.

However, the court’s decision to grant bail should not be interpreted as an acquittal. Garg remains an accused in the case, and the legal proceedings will continue.

Sandipan Garg bail and the pending chargesheet petition

Alongside the bail proceedings, another important legal matter involving Garg remains pending before the Gauhati High Court.

His legal team has separately challenged the chargesheet filed against him and sought to have it quashed. This petition raises a distinct legal question from his request for release on bail.

According to reports, Garg faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charge relates to the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore.

Meanwhile, the detailed reasoning behind the bail order had not been made public in the initial reports following the October 16 decision. Garg’s lawyer had said the court had not read out the full order.

Therefore, the precise grounds for granting bail should not be assumed without examining the detailed judicial order. The separate challenge to the chargesheet also remains relevant to the case’s future course.

Sandipan Garg bail follows relief for another accused

Garg’s release follows another significant development in the same investigation. On October 9, the Gauhati High Court granted bail to singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta, another accused in the case.

Mahanta subsequently walked out of jail. Her release marked an important change in the custody status of those facing allegations connected with the singer’s death.

However, the bail orders involving different accused must be considered separately. Each person faces specific allegations, and the court assesses individual applications according to the circumstances and applicable law.

Additionally, two of Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Borah and Paresh Baishya, received bail in a separate disproportionate assets case in September. That order did not secure their release in the case concerning the singer’s death.

As a result, bail in one case does not automatically cancel detention orders in another. The distinction remains important as proceedings involving multiple accused continue.

Background to the Zubeen Garg death case

Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea near Singapore. He had travelled there to attend the fourth edition of the North East India Festival.

His death triggered widespread concern across Assam and prompted investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department formed a Special Investigation Team to investigate the case after more than 60 first information reports were registered across the state.

Seven people were arrested in connection with the case. They included festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, band member Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Amrit Prabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg and the singer’s two personal security officers.

The accused face different charges under the BNS, including allegations relating to murder, culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy and causing death by negligence. These allegations remain subject to the legal process.

Separately, Singapore authorities investigated the death and reported no evidence of foul play. Singapore’s Coroner’s Court also ruled out foul play, concluding that the singer drowned after becoming severely intoxicated and declining a life jacket. Assam authorities have maintained that the Singapore findings would not halt the proceedings in India.

Sandipan Garg bail leaves key legal questions open

Sandipan Garg’s release marks a notable moment in the ongoing case, but it does not settle the questions surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death.

The pending chargesheet petition, the continuing trial and the proceedings against other accused will shape the next stage of the case. Meanwhile, investigators and prosecutors must establish their allegations through admissible evidence and the legal process.

For Zubeen Garg’s family, supporters and the wider Assamese community, the case remains deeply significant. The singer’s cultural influence has ensured sustained public interest in the search for answers.

Ultimately, the bail order changes Garg’s custody status, not the legal standard required to determine guilt. The court proceedings will continue, and the allegations against each accused must be assessed independently.
