CM’s Office Announces District-Wide Closure

The Chief Minister’s Office announced the holiday through an official post on social media platform X. The statement said the decision represents “the collective grief of the people” and honours the late leader’s long-standing service to the nation and Assam.

In a parallel move, the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suspended all scheduled party activities for the day as a sign of respect.

Three-Time Silchar MP With Long Political Career

Kabindra Purkayastha was a senior BJP leader and a prominent political figure in the Barak Valley region. He represented the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency three times—in 1991, 1998, and 2009.

Throughout his parliamentary career, Purkayastha earned recognition for his accessibility and grassroots engagement. Leaders across party lines acknowledged his contribution to public life and regional development.

Served as Union Minister Under Vajpayee Government

Purkayastha also served at the national level as Union Minister of State for Communications during the first National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His tenure lasted from 1998 to 1999.

During this period, he played a role in strengthening communication infrastructure and contributed to policymaking at the central level.

Passed Away in Silchar Due to Age-Related Ailments

The veteran leader breathed his last at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors treated him for age-related health complications. Hospital authorities confirmed that his condition deteriorated due to natural causes.

His passing triggered an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, party workers, and citizens across Assam.

Last Rites to Be Held on Thursday

Family sources said Purkayastha’s last rites will take place on Thursday in Silchar. Large numbers of party workers and admirers are expected to attend the funeral.

He is survived by his son, Kanad Purkayastha, a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, and a daughter. His wife passed away earlier.

Leaders Remember His Legacy

Senior BJP leaders described Kabindra Purkayastha as a disciplined and principled politician who dedicated decades of service to the people of Assam. Many recalled his calm demeanour and commitment to democratic values.

The state government said his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of political leaders.
