Tariffs on Indian Goods Reduced to 18 Per Cent
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing a major India–United States trade agreement. The deal reduces tariffs on “Made in India” products to 18 per cent, a move expected to strengthen India’s global trade position.
Sarma described the agreement as a landmark achievement and credited Prime Minister Modi’s leadership for advancing India’s economic interests on the world stage.

Benefits for Youth, Farmers, and MSMEs
In a post on X, the Assam Chief Minister said the trade deal would open new opportunities for Indian youth, farmers, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). He noted that lower tariffs would make Indian goods more competitive in the US market.
Sarma added that improved access to international markets would help expand exports and support job creation across multiple sectors. According to him, the agreement aligns with India’s long-term goal of promoting domestic manufacturing and entrepreneurship.
Strengthening India–US Cooperation
Sarma said the trade agreement would act as a force multiplier for cooperation between India and the United States. He highlighted the growing partnership between the two democracies under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.
He stated that closer economic collaboration would enhance bilateral ties and contribute to shared prosperity. The Chief Minister also emphasized that stronger trade relations would support innovation and investment flows between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi Welcomes Tariff Cut
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the tariff reduction on Monday after speaking with President Donald Trump. In a post on X, Modi welcomed the decision and said it would benefit Indian products in the global marketplace.
The Prime Minister said the move would create new economic opportunities for businesses and workers in India. He also stressed that cooperation between the two large democracies would benefit their people and contribute to global growth and stability.
Improved Market Access for Indian Exports
Officials said the agreement would improve market access for Indian goods in the United States. Lower tariffs are expected to encourage higher exports and strengthen supply chain linkages between the two countries.
The deal is also likely to deepen overall economic ties and reinforce strategic cooperation between India and the US. Analysts view the agreement as a positive step toward expanding trade volumes and enhancing long-term bilateral relations.
