Aizawl, Mizoram: The North Eastern Council (NEC) has significantly expanded its development initiatives in Mizoram with investments worth ₹339.06 crore during the 15th Finance Commission period between 2022 and 2026.
The funding aims to improve infrastructure, strengthen economic activities, support tourism, and enhance livelihoods across the state. Moreover, the Council has focused on balanced and inclusive growth by supporting projects in both urban and rural areas.
Under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC), the Council allocated ₹123.83 crore to multiple development initiatives. These projects include healthcare facilities, veterinary infrastructure, educational institutions, sports facilities, cultural centres, and community development programmes.
Additionally, NEC has increased support for agriculture and allied sectors to strengthen rural livelihoods in Mizoram. Officials stated that the projects promote wet rice cultivation, potato seed production, poultry farming, piggery, fisheries, livestock development, arecanut cultivation, and passion fruit processing.
The Council believes these initiatives will create employment opportunities and improve income generation for local farmers and rural communities.
Focus on Tourism and Cultural Preservation
Apart from agriculture and infrastructure, NEC has also invested in preserving Mizoram’s cultural and natural heritage. The Council funded cultural centres, ecological parks, eco-tourism initiatives, and tourism circuits to attract visitors and promote sustainable tourism.
Officials said tourism projects can generate local employment while also protecting traditional heritage and ecological resources in the state.
One of the important tourism-related projects includes development work at Vangchhia in Champhai district under the initiative titled “Our Heritage, Our Treasure.”
Furthermore, the Council released additional funds in April 2026 to support tourism infrastructure and related projects across Mizoram.
Major Road Projects Strengthen Connectivity
Road connectivity remains one of the key focus areas of NEC in Mizoram. Under the NESIDS-Roads programme, the Council sanctioned six major projects worth ₹277.99 crore.
These projects aim to improve transportation facilities and strengthen regional connectivity in remote areas of the state.
Among the major projects is the upgradation of the Saiha-Lungbun-Tlangnuam-Haka Road, which will improve connectivity with Myanmar. Officials stated that the project aligns with India’s Act East Policy and supports cross-border connectivity and trade opportunities.
So far, two road projects worth ₹25.19 crore have already been completed under the programme.
In April 2026, NEC also released ₹20.09 crore for ongoing road projects, including the Pukzing–Silsury Road and the Tualpui–Champhai Road.
Authorities expect these projects to improve travel, transportation of goods, and access to essential services in different districts of Mizoram.
Youth and Scientific Outreach Programmes
The NEC has also expanded youth development and scientific outreach initiatives in Mizoram.
Under the Ashtalakshmi Youth Exchange Programme, 581 students from different parts of India visited premier institutions in Northeast India. Mizoram University hosted 44 students in January 2026 as part of the programme.
Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen cultural exchange and increase awareness about Northeast India among youth from across the country.
At the same time, NEC supported scientific outreach through the NE-SPARKS initiative. Under the programme, 99 students from Mizoram visited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The visits helped students learn about space science, innovation, and scientific research. Moreover, officials believe such programmes can inspire students to pursue careers in science and technology.
Additional Development Projects in Mizoram
In April 2026, NEC released funds for several ongoing projects in Mizoram.
These projects include livestock rearing support in the Sinlung Hills Council area, the establishment of a State Veterinary Information and Resource Centre, and construction of a market building at West Phaileng in Mamit district.
Officials stated that these projects aim to improve market infrastructure, support animal husbandry, and strengthen local economic activities in the region.
Importance of Mizoram in Northeast India
Mizoram holds strategic importance in Northeast India because of its international border with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
