Sikkim Achieves Full Literacy Milestone

Gangtok, Sikkim: Sikkim has achieved a major milestone in the education sector after authorities officially declared the state fully literate under the ULLAS initiative.

Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia congratulated the people of Sikkim and called the achievement a historic moment for the Himalayan state.

In a post shared on X, Scindia wrote, “Saakshar Sikkim is now a reality! A historic moment for Sikkim as the State is formally declared fully literate under ULLAS.”

He stated that education remains the foundation of an empowered and developed society. Furthermore, he said the achievement reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of building a “Viksit North East.”

According to officials, the ULLAS initiative focuses on promoting lifelong learning opportunities and improving literacy levels among adults and communities across the country.

Centre Reaffirms Commitment to Sikkim’s Development

Scindia also reiterated the Centre’s commitment to accelerating development in Sikkim. Earlier this month, the Union Minister visited the state during the 51st Statehood Day celebrations.

During the visit, he extended greetings to the people of Sikkim and highlighted the importance of inclusive growth, education, and economic development in Northeast India.

He stated that the government remains committed to strengthening infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, and educational advancement in the region.

Moreover, the minister emphasized that literacy and education are essential for long-term social and economic progress.

₹360 Crore Mission for Organic Economy

Apart from education, Scindia highlighted a major ₹360 crore mission supported by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

The mission aims to transform Sikkim from a certified organic producer into a globally integrated premium organic economy.

Officials said the initiative will improve farmer incomes, strengthen farmer producer organizations (FPOs), and expand cold-chain and logistics infrastructure across the state.

In addition, the programme seeks to improve market access for organic products produced in Sikkim.

Authorities expect the initiative to benefit more than 66,000 farmer families across the state. The government also believes the programme will strengthen Sikkim’s position as a leading organic farming state in India.

Focus on Agriculture and Rural Development

Sikkim has already gained national recognition for adopting organic farming practices across the state. Therefore, the new mission aims to create stronger economic opportunities for farmers and rural communities.

Officials stated that improved logistics and cold-chain systems will help farmers reduce losses and access larger domestic and international markets.

Furthermore, farmer producer organizations will receive support to improve supply chain management, product branding, and export potential.

The Centre believes these measures can increase rural incomes and strengthen sustainable agricultural development in the state.

Literacy and Development Linked to Growth

Education and literacy continue to play a major role in Sikkim’s social progress. Experts believe that higher literacy levels can improve employment opportunities, healthcare awareness, and community participation.

The government also views literacy as a key factor in strengthening economic development and improving quality of life in Northeast India.

Scindia emphasized that the combined focus on literacy, agriculture, and economic development will help create a stronger and more self-reliant Sikkim.

Importance of Sikkim in Northeast India

Sikkim is strategically important in Northeast India because of its geographical location, tourism potential, and leadership in organic farming. The state also plays a significant role in India’s sustainable development and regional growth strategies. Therefore, investments in literacy, agriculture, and infrastructure are crucial for long-term progress in the region.
