The initiative also reinforces Meghalaya’s position as a leading organic farming state in Northeast India.

Conference Focuses on Development Financing

Later in the day, Sitharaman will attend the inaugural session of the “Leveraging Externally Aided Projects (EAPs) in the North-Eastern States” Conference in Shillong.

The conference will bring together Chief Ministers, Chief Secretaries, and senior officials from across the region. During the discussions, participants will explore ways to improve the implementation of externally funded projects. In addition, they will examine strategies to maximize the benefits of international development financing for northeastern states.

Meghalaya Launches ₹1,200 Crore Development Push

Sitharaman will also join Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong for a special ceremony.

During the event, leaders will lay the foundation stones for four major projects worth more than ₹1,200 crore. These initiatives aim to improve connectivity, promote tourism, support livelihoods, and strengthen human capital development across the state.

The projects include:

  1. Meghalaya Logistics and Connectivity Improvement Project (MLCIP)
  2. Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project
  3. Integrated Ecotourism and Sustainable Agri-based Livelihood Development Project
  4. Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya – Phase II

Additionally, these projects will create employment opportunities and encourage sustainable economic growth. At the same time, they will enhance infrastructure and improve the quality of life for local communities.

Why Meghalaya Matters

Meghalaya plays a vital role in the growth of organic agriculture and sustainable development in Northeast India. Because of its rich biodiversity and agricultural potential, the state continues to attract significant investment in farming, tourism, and infrastructure.

Therefore, projects that improve connectivity and support local industries can accelerate economic development throughout the region. As the Northeast expands its role in India’s growth story, such investments will become increasingly important.
