Anganwadi centre services in Assam’s Nagaon district have come under scrutiny after an Anganwadi helper was reportedly forced to run the centre from a garage at her home due to the absence of a proper facility.

The situation has raised concerns about the conditions in which young children receive early childhood care and nutrition services. The reported arrangement also highlights the wider challenge of ensuring basic infrastructure at Anganwadi centres in rural and semi-urban areas.

Centre reportedly operating from home garage

According to the report, the concerned Anganwadi centre does not have a suitable building of its own. As a result, the helper has been using a garage at her residence to keep the centre functioning.

The arrangement is not an ideal substitute for a dedicated Anganwadi building. Such centres are intended to provide a safe and accessible space for children and other beneficiaries under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) framework.

However, the reported use of a residential garage shows how workers may continue services despite infrastructure shortages. It also raises questions about whether the available space is adequate for regular activities.

Lack of basic infrastructure raises concerns

An Anganwadi centre serves an important role in delivering early childhood care and supplementary nutrition. The facilities are also linked to health and nutrition awareness for mothers and young children.

Therefore, the lack of a dedicated building can affect the way these services are delivered. A garage at a private residence may not provide the space, ventilation, storage arrangements or child-friendly environment expected at a formal centre.

The reported situation in Nagaon has consequently drawn attention to the need for better infrastructure. While the helper’s efforts have allowed activities to continue, responsibility for providing suitable facilities ultimately rests with the authorities concerned.

Anganwadi services are important for children

Anganwadi centres are a key part of India’s child development system. They support children in the early years and connect families with nutrition, health and preschool-related services.

In Assam, the government has continued recruitment and administrative processes for Anganwadi workers and helpers in different districts, including Nagaon. Recent recruitment notices for Nagaon have also reflected the continuing need for personnel at centres across the district.

An Anganwadi centre therefore needs both trained personnel and a suitable physical setting. Staffing alone cannot address infrastructure gaps if children do not have an appropriate place to attend activities.

Infrastructure gaps need attention

The reported case is also part of a broader concern about inadequate infrastructure at some Anganwadi facilities in Assam. Earlier reports have highlighted centres operating without proper buildings, toilets or drinking water facilities.

Such shortcomings can create difficulties for workers and beneficiaries alike. Moreover, poor infrastructure can make it harder to maintain hygiene, store supplies safely and conduct preschool activities effectively.

For children, the physical environment matters. A dedicated centre can provide a more stable setting for learning, nutrition support and interaction. In contrast, using a residential garage may offer only a temporary solution.

Need for a permanent solution

The Nagaon case underlines the importance of ensuring that every Anganwadi centre has a safe and functional space. Temporary arrangements may help keep services running, but they should not become a substitute for permanent infrastructure.

Authorities may need to assess the reported centre and determine what facilities are available, what gaps remain and whether a dedicated building can be provided. Any corrective steps would also need to ensure that children and other beneficiaries continue receiving essential services without disruption.

Overall, the situation points to a basic issue: frontline workers can keep a programme running, but they cannot replace the infrastructure required to deliver it properly. A permanent and suitable Anganwadi centre would provide a safer and more appropriate setting for children in the Nagaon area.
