The Jeremiah Pohthmi arrest has taken the number of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) leaders held in connection with the August 19 Shillong bike rally violence to four. Meghalaya Police arrested Pohthmi, the union’s assistant organising secretary, on Monday, August 24.
Police said Pohthmi was arrested from the Nongmensong area of East Khasi Hills district. He was later produced before a court, where investigators sought his custody for further questioning as the probe into the violence continues.
Jeremiah Pohthmi arrest follows three earlier arrests
The Jeremiah Pohthmi arrest came days after police detained three senior KSU leaders over the same incident. They are KSU president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben Najiar.
The three were arrested after the union’s black-flag motorcycle rally turned violent across parts of Shillong. Police have linked the case to alleged assaults on civilians, vandalism of vehicles and damage to public property.
Pohthmi also serves as president of the KSU Nongmensong unit. Police said he is among five masked persons identified during the investigation into the violence.
Police focus on attacks on Assam vehicles
The Jeremiah Pohthmi arrest is significant because investigators have been examining attacks involving vehicles registered in Assam. Police have said that masked individuals were allegedly involved in incidents of arson and assault during the rally.
According to reports, at least 31 vehicles were damaged during the unrest. One vehicle was reportedly set on fire, while government property was also damaged. Statues of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were allegedly vandalised during the disturbances.
However, the allegations remain part of an ongoing criminal investigation. The arrests do not by themselves establish guilt, and the accused will have the opportunity to contest the charges through due legal process.
Special Investigation Team continues probe
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the case. The investigation is being monitored by the Inspector General of Police in charge of Law and Order.
Police have also said that identifying masked participants remains a challenge. Nevertheless, investigators are working to establish the identities of those allegedly involved and complete the case at the earliest.
The Jeremiah Pohthmi arrest therefore forms part of a wider police effort to identify people suspected of involvement in the violence rather than an isolated action.
Rally violence raised wider concerns
The violence occurred during a KSU black-flag bike rally linked to the organisation’s five-point charter of demands. The rally followed an agitation that included demands related to migration, recruitment and implementation of laws concerning residents and migrant workers.
The situation also created tension beyond Shillong. Reports of attacks on Assam-registered vehicles led to protests and disruptions along parts of the Assam-Meghalaya border. The incident raised concerns over the safety of commuters, commercial drivers and tourists travelling between the neighbouring states.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the August 19 violence. The court has sought an action-taken report from the state government after noting damage to public property, vehicles and risks faced by members of the public.
Investigation enters a critical phase
The Jeremiah Pohthmi arrest brings the number of KSU leaders arrested in the case to four, while police continue efforts to identify the remaining masked suspects. Investigators are also examining evidence linked to alleged attacks, vandalism and arson during the rally.
At the same time, the KSU issue remains politically sensitive, with the Meghalaya government inviting the union for talks over its five-point charter. The government’s move indicates that dialogue is being pursued alongside the ongoing legal process.
For now, police action and the court proceedings will determine the next stage of the case. The Jeremiah Pohthmi arrest marks another development in the investigation, but the final responsibility for the alleged offences will depend on evidence presented through the legal process.
