Myanmar-Arunachal-Tinsukia drug corridor has emerged as a fresh concern for Upper Assam, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday. He said traffickers were trying to move narcotics from Myanmar through Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district and into Tinsukia.
The warning comes as Assam intensifies its campaign against drugs. Sarma said the suspected shift in routes showed that trafficking networks were adapting to stronger enforcement along established corridors.
New route raises concern in Upper Assam
Sarma said the traditional flow of drugs from Myanmar through Moreh in Manipur was now being supplemented by a route through Changlang. According to him, recently arrested drug peddlers provided information about the emerging pathway.
He described the Myanmar-Arunachal-Tinsukia drug corridor as a “very worrying signal” for Upper Assam. The chief minister also stressed that enforcement agencies would need sustained surveillance to prevent the route from becoming more established.
The claim points to a broader challenge for authorities. Traffickers can change routes when pressure increases on known supply chains, making intelligence sharing and coordinated operations important.

The Myanmar-Arunachal-Tinsukia drug corridor warning came amid several recent drug seizures in Assam. Sarma said authorities had recently seized drugs worth around Rs 80 crore that were allegedly ready to be transported to Punjab.
Separately, Assam Police’s Special Task Force seized 10.48 kg of suspected heroin in Guwahati on August 14, with police estimating its value at around Rs 80 crore. Investigators said the consignment had arrived from Manipur and was intended for Punjab, while the case remains under investigation.
Sarma said the drug networks were attempting to change routes because of the state’s intensified crackdown. In a social media post, he warned that a change in route would not weaken the government’s resolve to pursue trafficking networks.
Border geography adds to the challenge
The Myanmar-Arunachal-Tinsukia drug corridor has drawn attention because Arunachal Pradesh shares an international border with Myanmar. The terrain in the region is difficult, while long stretches of the border remain challenging for surveillance and enforcement.
The wider India-Myanmar border is also recognised as a major entry point for narcotics, including methamphetamine and heroin. A 2025 assessment by the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses noted that drug trafficking from Myanmar, along with insurgent movement and illegal arms trade, remains a concern along the border.
However, the emergence of a suspected route through Changlang does not by itself establish the scale or permanence of the network. Further investigation and seizures will be needed to determine how widely the corridor is being used.
Why Tinsukia matters
Tinsukia is strategically located in Upper Assam and has road links to areas close to the Arunachal Pradesh border. As a result, authorities are likely to focus on movement through vulnerable border and transit points.
The issue also highlights the importance of coordination between Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and central enforcement agencies. Information from arrests and seizures can help investigators map routes, identify suppliers and track the movement of narcotics towards markets outside the Northeast.
