Manipur civilian killings have triggered a strong political response from the Manipur People’s Party (MPP), which has demanded accountability from the state leadership after four Naga civilians were reportedly killed in Kangpokpi district.
The MPP staged a protest at its Imphal headquarters on August 29 over the August 27 attack along the Imphal-Tamenglong Road. The party questioned the government’s ability to protect civilians and called for action against those responsible.
MPP targets Manipur leadership
During the protest, the MPP questioned the responsibilities of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam. The party said the state government must ensure the safety of citizens and uphold the rule of law.
The MPP issued a blunt political warning, saying, “If you cannot protect Manipuris, resign.” The statement was directed at the state leadership over what the party described as continuing threats to civilian security.
The demand comes as the government faces renewed scrutiny over security arrangements in vulnerable areas. The Chief Minister had earlier condemned the Kangpokpi attack and chaired a high-level security meeting after the incident.
Manipur civilian killings raise security concerns
The reported attack took place on the IT Road between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga village in Kangpokpi district on August 27. According to local reports, civilians travelling in a vehicle came under fire at about 8.30 am.
Four Naga civilians were reported killed, while another person was injured. One additional person was initially reported missing. Police had not officially confirmed all details when some reports were published, and the circumstances and identities of the attackers remained under investigation.
The victims were members of the Liangmai Naga community, according to reports and statements from Naga organisations. The United Naga Council condemned the killings and called for an investigation by a Special Investigation Team.
MPP seeks probe and prosecution
The MPP has demanded an immediate investigation into the killings. It also called for the identification, arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.
Moreover, the party sought an independent SIT investigation, arguing that accountability is necessary to restore public confidence. It also raised concerns about the safety of civilians travelling through affected areas.
The MPP’s protest reflects wider concerns among communities in Manipur about recurring violence and the protection of civilians. The latest incident has also increased pressure on authorities to prevent further attacks and ensure safe movement along important roads.
Calls for stronger civilian protection
The party has also demanded better security measures and support for displaced people. It said civilians should be able to return to their homes safely and called for conditions that would allow displaced families to rebuild their lives.
These demands come against the backdrop of prolonged ethnic violence in Manipur since May 2023. Although the latest attack involves Naga civilians, the incident has added another layer to security concerns in the state’s hill areas.
Government faces pressure after attack
The state government has condemned the reported killings. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh instructed security officials to identify the perpetrators and take action, while a high-level security meeting was held in Imphal after the incident.
The Home portfolio is held by Govindas Konthoujam, according to the Manipur government’s March 2026 portfolio notification. Khemchand Singh became Chief Minister in February 2026 after the formation of the new state government.
Therefore, the MPP’s resignation demand places direct political pressure on the Chief Minister and Home Minister to demonstrate that the government can provide effective civilian protection.
