Bhupen Hazarika was remembered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday as a cultural voice that carried Assam’s soul and the spirit of the Northeast to the entire nation. Modi paid tribute to the legendary musician, poet and filmmaker on his 100th birth anniversary.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Hazarika’s music gave expression to the thoughts and spirit of countless people. He also recalled that the singer’s songs brought people closer and said his life and work would continue to inspire generations.

Bhupen Hazarika remembered on centenary

The tribute came as the country marked the birth centenary of Hazarika, who was born on September 8, 1926. Known for his deep, resonant voice and wide-ranging work, he became one of Assam’s most recognised cultural figures.

Modi said he warmly recalled attending the beginning of Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations in Guwahati last year. The Prime Minister had joined a major programme in the city in September 2025 to mark the musician’s 100th birth anniversary.

That event brought together senior leaders, artists and members of Hazarika’s family. It also highlighted the continuing place of his music in Assam’s cultural life and its reach beyond the state.

Bhupen Hazarika’s music crossed borders

Hazarika’s influence was not limited to singing. His work covered music, lyrics, composition, filmmaking and writing, allowing him to connect cultural themes with wider social concerns.

His songs often drew from the people, landscapes and traditions of Assam. At the same time, they addressed themes that could be understood across linguistic and regional boundaries. As a result, his music developed a strong national appeal while retaining its Assamese identity.

The Prime Minister has previously described Hazarika’s music as a force that united India and inspired generations. During the 2025 centenary celebrations, Modi said the singer gave voice to India’s emotions and connected music with sensitivity.

Bhupen Hazarika and the Northeast

For Assam and the wider Northeast, Hazarika’s legacy has a special cultural significance. His work brought regional experiences into the national conversation without separating them from the broader idea of India.

Moreover, his songs helped audiences outside the Northeast engage with its people, landscapes and concerns. His cultural contribution therefore became a bridge between regional identity and national recognition.

Modi’s latest tribute again placed this role at the centre of Hazarika’s legacy. By describing his voice as carrying the spirit of the Northeast to the entire nation, the Prime Minister highlighted the singer’s importance as a cultural ambassador.

Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy continues

Hazarika’s influence has continued through his songs, recordings and the generations of artists who draw from his work. His music remains part of public cultural life in Assam and is also remembered across India.

The centenary celebrations that began in 2025 have provided a wider platform to revisit his contribution. Government and cultural programmes have used the occasion to honour his music, ideas and connection with Assam and the Northeast.

In September 2025, the Inland Waterways Authority of India also launched “Bistirna Parore: A Musical Voyage from Sadiya to Dhubri”, a cultural initiative along the Brahmaputra to commemorate his birth centenary. The programme linked his artistic legacy with the river that has long shaped Assam’s cultural imagination.

A voice that remains relevant

For Modi, Hazarika’s lasting importance lies not only in his popularity but also in his ability to express shared human experiences through music. His songs, the Prime Minister said, brought people closer.

That message remains central to the centenary observances. While Hazarika belonged deeply to Assam, his work reached audiences far beyond the state and helped place Northeast India more firmly on the national cultural map.

As the birth centenary year continues, his legacy is being revisited through music, public programmes and renewed attention to his contribution. Overall, the latest tribute underlines why Bhupen Hazarika remains an enduring symbol of Assam’s cultural identity and the Northeast’s voice in India.
