Sharma’s remarks come as the BJP prepares to reclaim the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined the BJP and later won the Dispur Assembly seat. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for October 6, with counting set for October 9.
Nagaon bypoll enters a crucial phase
The Nagaon bypoll gained momentum after the Election Commission announced the schedule earlier this month. Candidates have to file nominations by September 16, while September 19 is the final date for withdrawal.
Against this backdrop, the BJP has formally moved ahead with Debasish Sharma’s candidature. Reports on September 11 said the party’s Central Election Committee approved his name for the Nagaon seat.
The decision follows Sharma’s formal entry into the BJP on September 8. He joined the party alongside senior journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita at an event attended by senior Assam BJP leaders.
Debasish Sharma stresses voter judgment
Sharma’s emphasis on voters using their conscience places the focus on the electorate rather than campaign rhetoric. His comments suggest that he wants the contest to be judged on his record, political position and the issues facing Nagaon.
His political entry has also drawn attention because of his long administrative career. Sharma served in several government positions, including as Nagaon Deputy Commissioner, before taking voluntary retirement and joining active politics.
The BJP has highlighted his experience in administration and his association with Assam’s social and cultural life. State BJP president Dilip Saikia had earlier said Sharma’s entry would strengthen the party’s organisation and public outreach.

The transition from bureaucracy to electoral politics has made Sharma one of the most discussed figures in the Nagaon bypoll. Before his candidature was confirmed, his entry into the BJP had already triggered speculation about whether the party would field him.
At that stage, Saikia had said the BJP had a panel of potential candidates and that the party would take the final decision. The BJP has now moved beyond that speculation by approving Sharma as its candidate.

Congress leaders had approached the Election Commission with concerns about neutrality and sought scrutiny of issues related to his tenure. The Nagaon bypoll is important for the BJP because the seat was held by Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The vacancy followed Bordoloi’s resignation from Parliament after he joined the BJP and subsequently entered the Assam Assembly.

Meanwhile, the opposition space remains competitive. AIUDF has already announced Rejaul Karim as its candidate, while Congress has been preparing separately for the bypoll.
