Tipra Motha has secured a major advantage in Tripura’s Village Committee elections, winning 1,548 seats unopposed ahead of polling on September 28. The BJP has also secured 82 seats without a contest, taking the combined tally of the two ruling alliance partners to 1,630.
The unopposed victories account for more than 35% of the 4,597 seats being contested across 587 Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). As a result, elections will now be held for 2,967 seats on September 28.
Tipra Motha dominates the unopposed tally
The scale of the Tipra Motha victory is significant. Its 1,548 uncontested seats are more than 1,400 higher than the BJP’s tally of 82. The figures underline the party’s strong organisational presence across Tripura’s tribal areas.
The latest numbers came after the completion of the nomination withdrawal process. Earlier figures had shown 1,148 unopposed Tipra Motha candidates and 31 BJP candidates. The final tally increased after the withdrawal deadline, giving both parties a larger number of uncontested seats.
Tipra Motha’s performance is particularly important because the party emerged as the dominant political force in the TTAADC elections earlier this year. It won 24 of the 28 elected council seats, while the BJP secured four.
Polling remains for 2,967 seats
Despite the large number of uncontested victories, the September 28 election remains important. Voting will decide the outcome in 2,967 seats where candidates are still in the fray.
The Village Committee elections cover 4,597 seats across 587 committees in the tribal areas. The polls are being held after a long gap and are therefore being closely watched as a test of grassroots political influence.
Meanwhile, the State Election Commission data showed that 10,889 nomination papers were found valid after scrutiny. Tipra Motha had the highest number of valid nominations at 4,361, followed by the CPI(M) with 2,456 and the BJP with 1,971.
BJP and Tipra Motha contest as allies
The election carries added political significance because the BJP and Tipra Motha are contesting as alliance partners along with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT).
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier announced that the three parties would jointly contest the Village Committee elections. The announcement followed discussions involving senior leaders of the BJP and Tipra Motha, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.
However, the alliance has not prevented overlapping contests in every area. Final candidate figures indicate that BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT candidates are still facing one another in a number of seats, showing that local-level electoral arrangements remain complex.
Grassroots contest remains closely watched
The distribution of candidates also highlights the differing organisational strengths of the alliance partners. Tipra Motha has a much wider presence across the tribal areas, while the BJP continues to maintain a significant electoral network.
The party’s large number of uncontested victories could strengthen its position before the remaining September 28 contests. However, the final political picture will depend on the results across the seats where voters will still cast ballots.
September 28 poll will decide the next phase
The Tipra Motha advantage is already clear from the 1,548 seats secured without a contest. Yet the September 28 polling will provide the more competitive test of support across the remaining Village Committee seats.
The results will be closely followed because the committees form an important layer of local governance in the TTAADC areas. Counting is scheduled for October 5, with the election process expected to conclude by October 8.
Overall, Tipra Motha enters the final phase of the election with a substantial head start. The September 28 vote will now determine whether that early advantage translates into broader control of Tripura’s village institutions.
