The Tripura Mizoram border issue has gained fresh momentum after senior officials from both states agreed to form separate teams to examine outstanding boundary matters. The decision followed a Home Secretary-level meeting held in Agartala on Thursday.
The latest step is aimed at creating a factual and documented basis for further discussions. Officials will study border-related issues, collect records and examine information before the two governments consider possible solutions.
Tripura Mizoram border talks enter a new phase
The latest meeting was held at the State Guest House in Agartala at the initiative of the Tripura Home Department. Senior officials from both governments took part in preliminary discussions on the inter-state boundary.
Tripura was represented by Home, Power and Rural Development Secretary Abhishek Singh, Revenue Secretary Dr Milind Dharmarao Ramteke and other senior officials. The Mizoram delegation included Home and Revenue Secretary Vanlalmawia, along with officials and members of its Border Study Group.
Moreover, both sides agreed that detailed examination should come before further negotiations. This approach is expected to help identify the different points of disagreement and separate documented facts from competing claims.
Teams to examine border records and claims
Under the latest arrangement, Tripura and Mizoram will constitute separate teams to study the border issue in detail. The teams will collect relevant information, records and documents connected with the boundary.
The first stage will focus on compiling and examining available material. Their findings will then provide a basis for subsequent discussions between the two governments.
This technical and documentary approach could be important because boundary questions often involve historical records, maps, administrative documents and claims concerning specific areas. Therefore, establishing a common factual record is expected to be a key step before decisions are considered.
The teams are not, by themselves, a final settlement mechanism. Instead, they are intended to support future consultations with verified information.
Joint survey could aid demarcation
The latest development follows an earlier round of high-level talks in Agartala in August. During those discussions, the two states agreed to conduct a joint survey of Phuldungsei, a village in North Tripura’s Jampui Hills that has been claimed by both Tripura and Mizoram.
The August talks also covered the broader 109-kilometre inter-state boundary. Officials discussed demarcation, administrative coordination, law and order and issues affecting people living in border areas.
The proposed survey and the newly agreed technical review indicate a gradual shift towards resolving disputed questions through field-level assessment and official documentation. However, the process still requires further consultations and agreement between the two governments.
Political dialogue created fresh momentum
The renewed process began after Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma discussed the border issue on the sidelines of the North Eastern Council’s 73rd plenary session in Shillong.
Saha subsequently proposed that senior officials should examine the matter before a chief minister-level meeting. Lalduhoma agreed to continue discussions, paving the way for administrative-level engagement.
Earlier reports indicated that the two states wanted a peaceful and mutually acceptable solution. The August meeting in Agartala was expected to strengthen coordination and create a foundation for resolving the long-pending dispute.
Tripura Mizoram border resolution remains a work in progress
The latest meeting marks another step in a process that has developed through political dialogue, official consultations and proposed field surveys. The decision to create teams gives the Tripura Mizoram border discussions a more structured technical framework.
However, officials have not announced a final settlement. The teams must first examine records and submit their findings, after which further discussions will determine the way forward.
