BPF bypolls in three Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) constituencies are taking shape after the Bodoland People’s Front decided its electoral strategy on September 19. The party will field its own candidates in Kajalgaon and Rowta, while leaving Darangajuli for the BJP.
The decisions were taken during a meeting of the BPF Policy-Making Body at the party’s central office in Kokrajhar. BPF president and BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary attended the meeting, which focused on the upcoming by-elections and the party’s preparations.
The party also decided to approach the Election Commission and seek an early schedule for the three bypolls. However, no polling date was announced in the report on the meeting.
BPF bypolls keep Kajalgaon and Rowta with party
Under the decision, BPF will contest both Kajalgaon and Rowta rather than leave the seats to an ally. The move gives the party a direct electoral role in two constituencies where it has previously had representation.
In the 2025 BTC election, BPF won a majority with 28 of the council’s 40 constituencies. Paniram Brahma won Kajalgaon for BPF, while Charan Boro won Rowta for the party.
The latest decision does not name the candidates who will contest the two seats in the bypolls. Therefore, the party’s announcement establishes its choice of constituencies but does not yet provide a final candidate list.
The decision also comes as BPF prepares its wider organisational activities. The party said it plans to publish a magazine on development initiatives under the Hagrama Mohilary-led administration on October 5.
Darangajuli left for BJP
The most notable part of the BPF bypolls strategy is the decision on Darangajuli. BPF has decided to leave the constituency for the BJP, meaning the two parties will not compete against each other there under the announced arrangement.
Darangajuli was won by the BJP in the 2025 BTC election. Bijit Gwra Narzary was listed as the BJP winner from the constituency. The result gave the BJP a presence in the 40-member council alongside its broader political relationship with BPF.
The BPF’s latest decision therefore creates a different contest structure across the three seats. The party will seek its own candidates in two constituencies, while the BJP has been given the space to contest Darangajuli.
Party seeks early schedule for BPF bypolls
The timing of the BPF bypolls will depend on the Election Commission. BPF has formally decided to request that the authorities conduct the elections at the earliest.
An early schedule would allow political parties to begin candidate selection, campaign planning and organisational mobilisation in the three constituencies. At present, however, the BPF has not publicly identified its nominees for Kajalgaon and Rowta.
Meanwhile, the party is continuing activities beyond the bypoll preparations. Mohilary said BPF would organise district-level youth festivals during the upcoming Puja holidays. The party also announced plans to distribute land pattas under each Circle Office.
BPF bypolls add a fresh contest in the BTR
The three constituencies will now become important areas of political activity in the Bodoland Territorial Region. The 2025 BTC election produced a council in which BPF held the largest number of seats, while BJP and other parties also secured representation.
For the BPF, the immediate focus is clear: prepare candidates for Kajalgaon and Rowta and seek an early election schedule. For Darangajuli, the party has chosen to leave the contest to the BJP.
The next major development will be the announcement of polling dates and, subsequently, candidate names. Until then, the September 19 decisions provide the first clear outline of how the BPF plans to approach the three BTC bypolls.
