Mizoram tourism is set for a fresh policy push after Chief Minister Lalduhoma met NITI Aayog member Dr Joram Aniya in Aizawl on September 21. The meeting focused on ways to accelerate development in the state, with tourism, ginger processing and school innovation among the key issues discussed.

Officials said the discussions also covered the use of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project after its completion. Lalduhoma welcomed NITI Aayog’s attention to issues raised by Mizoram and sought continued support to turn the state’s development priorities into action.

Mizoram tourism gets policy attention

Mizoram tourism was a major focus of the meeting. Lalduhoma and Aniya discussed measures to attract more visitors to the state and expand the economic benefits of tourism.

Mizoram tourism has been promoted through community-based tourism, with self-help groups and local communities playing a role in tourism activities. In a recent interaction with NITI Aayog, Lalduhoma highlighted the state’s tourism potential and said tourist footfall had increased significantly over the previous four years.

However, improving visitor numbers also depends on connectivity, infrastructure and market access. Therefore, the state is looking at tourism alongside broader transport and development priorities.

Kaladan project linked to tourism and growth

The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project also featured in the talks. The project is intended to improve connectivity between Mizoram and Myanmar through a combination of waterways, roads and other transport links.

The officials discussed how Mizoram could make effective use of the project after its completion. For the state, better connectivity could support trade and create opportunities for Mizoram tourism and other sectors.

Meanwhile, the meeting did not announce a new tourism scheme or funding package. Instead, it highlighted areas where the state wants continued policy cooperation from NITI Aayog.

Mizoram tourism and ginger value addition

The meeting also placed ginger processing and value addition on the development agenda. This comes as Mizoram expands efforts to move beyond the sale of raw agricultural produce.

In May 2026, the Centre launched the ₹189.79-crore Mizoram Ginger Mission with the state government. The mission brings together programmes and agencies involved in agriculture, rural development, food processing and market development, with a focus on strengthening the ginger value chain.

Mizoram has also received national attention for its ginger production. NITI Aayog recognised the state as the “Ginger Capital of India” in 2025, while state authorities have continued work on processing and market linkages.

Processing could raise farm value

The focus on ginger processing is aimed at increasing value addition within the state. Processing can create opportunities for products with longer shelf life and wider markets, although the impact will depend on infrastructure, quality standards, supply chains and market demand.

The Mizoram Ginger Mission was designed to address several parts of the value chain, including production, post-harvest management, processing, marketing and institutional support. It also seeks to bring farmers and other stakeholders into a more coordinated system.

For farmers, stronger processing and market links could help reduce dependence on raw produce sales. Yet implementation will remain important as the state works to build processing capacity and reliable market connections.

School innovation adds another priority

The meeting also discussed expanding Atal Tinkering Labs to more schools across Mizoram. The labs are designed to encourage students to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through practical learning.

The education discussion adds another dimension to the state’s development agenda. It also gives Mizoram tourism and agriculture a wider skills base over time. Tourism and agriculture can create economic opportunities, while school innovation can support skills and entrepreneurship among young people.

Dr Aniya is in Aizawl to attend the NITI Aayog Regional Workshop on the North Eastern Region. She assured the Chief Minister that NITI Aayog would continue working closely with Mizoram on initiatives aimed at accelerating development.

For Mizoram tourism, the latest meeting signals continued attention to visitor growth, connectivity and community participation. At the same time, the push for ginger processing shows an effort to add more value to one of the state’s important agricultural products. Together, the discussions reflect a broader development approach that links tourism, agriculture, connectivity and education.
