Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath reviews TSECL preparations for uninterrupted electricity supply during Durga Puja in Tripura

Tripura festive power preparedness has received renewed attention as the state prepares for higher electricity demand during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath reviewed arrangements with officials of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and Tripura Power Generation Limited (TPGL). The review focused on generation, transmission, maintenance and emergency response.

Authorities are preparing for a possible peak demand of around 410 MW during the Puja period. Last year, actual peak demand reached about 373 MW, while officials had planned for 380 MW.

The government is also considering additional power arrangements and plans to prioritise Tripura’s domestic requirements during the festival. Meanwhile, field teams have been asked to maintain round-the-clock readiness in areas expecting major celebrations and large public gatherings.

Tripura Festive Power Preparedness Focuses on Higher Demand

Ratan Lal Nath chaired the review meeting at the TSECL office on October 2. TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu and senior officials attended the discussion on festive power arrangements.

The meeting examined the preparations required to maintain reliable electricity across Tripura during Durga Puja. Officials expect demand to rise as households, markets, public spaces and Puja pandals operate with increased activity throughout the celebrations.

This year’s planning uses a projected peak requirement of approximately 410 MW. That figure represents a significant increase over the 373 MW peak recorded during last year’s Puja period. Therefore, TSECL has been asked to prepare for a higher load and possible operational challenges.

Nath stressed preventive action rather than waiting for technical problems to cause extended interruptions. He directed officials to identify potential faults early and take corrective measures before the festival begins.

Furthermore, the minister called for adequate manpower and equipment at the field level. Such arrangements are intended to help teams respond quickly if faults occur during periods of heavy electricity consumption.

The review also placed particular emphasis on locations with large crowds. Major Puja celebrations, markets, public spaces and other important installations are expected to receive close attention throughout the festive period.

Transmission Lines and Emergency Restoration Get Attention

A major part of the latest review involved the condition of the state’s transmission network. Officials assessed maintenance requirements and reviewed the status of 132 KV, 66 KV and 33 KV transmission lines.

Transmission infrastructure will remain important during the festival because a technical failure at a key point can affect electricity delivery to multiple areas. Consequently, officials discussed arrangements for immediate restoration if tripping or other technical problems occur.

Nath instructed TSECL teams to strengthen their response mechanisms. Consumer complaints and electricity faults should receive prompt attention, particularly during the days when demand and public activity remain high.

In addition, the minister emphasised coordination between senior officials and field-level personnel. Quick communication can help teams identify emerging problems and mobilise the required resources without unnecessary delay.

Standby equipment will also form part of the contingency arrangements. Officials have been asked to keep sufficient standby transformers, vehicles, ladders and manpower available across the state. These resources can support restoration work when equipment failures or other emergencies affect local supply.

The focus on equipment availability reflects the need for faster field intervention. Instead of waiting for resources to arrive after a failure, prepared teams can begin restoration work more quickly.

Moreover, continuous monitoring will remain important throughout the celebrations. TSECL has been directed to maintain round-the-clock preparedness so that emerging faults receive attention as soon as possible.

Additional Power Arrangements Planned for Puja

The expected 410 MW demand has also prompted the state to examine additional sources of electricity. Tripura has traditionally coordinated power arrangements with neighbouring states during periods of changing demand. This year, officials have again discussed obtaining additional electricity if required.

Nath said Tripura usually imports power from Mizoram during the Puja period to meet additional demand. In contrast, Tripura supplies additional electricity to Mizoram during the Christmas period when demand rises there. The minister said similar arrangements could continue this year.

The state is also considering reducing electricity supplied to Bangladesh during the festival so that domestic requirements receive priority. Reports on the latest preparations said the government was examining this option as part of its strategy for managing the anticipated increase in consumption.

Additionally, officials are discussing the possibility of procuring electricity from other regions if the situation requires it. Such flexibility could provide an additional buffer if actual demand exceeds initial expectations.

Last year’s experience provides an important reference point for this year’s planning. Authorities had anticipated a 380 MW peak in 2025, but actual demand remained around 373 MW. This year, however, the state has prepared for a higher figure of 410 MW.

The higher planning figure does not mean that consumption will necessarily reach 410 MW. Rather, it provides TSECL with a preparedness target for managing possible peak requirements during the festival.

TSECL Asked to Maintain Round-the-Clock Field Readiness

Reliable electricity will be important for Puja pandals, markets, public areas and other facilities operating during the celebrations. Large gatherings can also increase pressure on local distribution networks, particularly in areas with concentrated festive activity.

For that reason, Nath asked TSECL officials and employees to remain responsive throughout the Puja period. He also stressed that field-level teams should coordinate closely with senior officials and act quickly when problems emerge.

The government has also taken staffing into account. According to reports on the wider preparedness plan, leave for power department and TSECL employees has been cancelled during the Puja period to ensure sufficient personnel remain available for emergency operations. Standby transformers are also planned for deployment if existing equipment suffers damage.

Meanwhile, authorities are monitoring conditions that could affect electricity infrastructure during the festival. The India Meteorological Department is expected to provide a comprehensive weather assessment before October 10, which can help the government take precautionary measures if necessary.

The emphasis on preventive maintenance is particularly relevant because festive electricity demand can change rapidly. A sudden fault during a major celebration could affect thousands of consumers, making quick restoration an important part of the preparedness strategy.

Therefore, the latest review combines several elements rather than relying on additional generation alone. Transmission maintenance, standby equipment, field manpower, external power arrangements and rapid complaint handling will all contribute to the state’s overall strategy.

TSECL’s preparedness will become increasingly important as Durga Puja approaches. The main objective remains maintaining reliable electricity while ensuring that technical problems do not cause prolonged inconvenience for consumers.

Conclusion

Tripura festive power preparedness has been strengthened ahead of Durga Puja, with Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath reviewing TSECL and TPGL arrangements for the expected rise in electricity demand. Officials are preparing for a possible peak requirement of around 410 MW while reviewing generation, transmission and emergency restoration measures.

The state is also considering additional electricity arrangements, including imports from neighbouring regions and prioritising domestic requirements during the festival. Meanwhile, TSECL teams have been instructed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance, adequate manpower and standby equipment. These measures are intended to support stable electricity supply throughout the celebrations.
