Respiratory Diseases Lead Causes of Death in Mizoram

The Mizoram government identified respiratory diseases as the largest category of medically certified deaths in 2025.

According to the MCCD Report, respiratory illnesses claimed 721 lives during the year. Of these, 268 deaths involved women.

Consequently, respiratory diseases accounted for 17.3% of the state’s medically certified fatalities.

The findings highlight the significant contribution of respiratory conditions to recorded mortality in Mizoram.

However, the report’s figures cover medically certified deaths rather than every death registered across the state.

Digestive and Circulatory Diseases Rank Second and Third

Digestive system diseases emerged as the second-leading cause of medically certified deaths in Mizoram.

According to the report, these conditions accounted for 15% of fatalities.

Meanwhile, circulatory system diseases ranked third, contributing 13.7% of medically certified deaths.

Additionally, infectious and parasitic diseases accounted for 12.2% of the total.

Cancer and other neoplasms contributed another 11%.

Together, these five disease categories represented 69.2% of all medically certified deaths in Mizoram during 2025.

Mizoram Records Decline in Medically Certified Deaths

The report also revealed a decline in the total number of medically certified deaths compared with the previous year.

Mizoram recorded 4,146 medically certified deaths in 2025, compared with 4,329 in 2024.

Therefore, the annual count decreased by 183 cases, representing a decline of approximately 4.2%.

However, this reduction does not necessarily indicate a similar decline in the state’s overall mortality rate.

Changes in medical certification coverage and reporting may also influence the annual figures.

Aizawl Reports Highest Number of Medically Certified Deaths

Aizawl district recorded the highest number of medically certified deaths in Mizoram during 2025.

According to the report, Aizawl accounted for 2,664 deaths, significantly exceeding the figures from other districts.

Meanwhile, Lunglei recorded 350 medically certified deaths.

Kolasib followed with 282 deaths.

However, these district totals reflect medically certified cases and do not establish district-wise mortality rates.

Mizoram Government Releases MCCD Report 2025

Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths-cum-Commissioner and Secretary Vanlaldina Fanai released the MCCD Report 2025.

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics organised the report-release programme.

The publication provides information about medically certified causes of death across Mizoram.

Furthermore, the findings offer valuable insights into major disease categories associated with fatalities.

Why Is the Mizoram Mortality Report Important?

Mizoram is a northeastern Indian state bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Its geographical location and healthcare infrastructure make district-level health statistics important for public health planning.
