South Africa calls on BRICS leaders to address conflict between Russia and Ukraine

South Africa, as the chair of the BRICS grouping, has called on its members to take a more active role in resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The country’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, expressed concern that the conflict has diverted attention from global challenges such as terrorism, food insecurity, climate change, and instability, particularly in Africa.

The BRICS grouping comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. As the leader of this influential group, South Africa is urging its members to use their collective power to address the conflict in Ukraine and help restore global stability.

Pandor’s comments came during a speech to parliament, in which she emphasized the need for a concerted effort to tackle the challenges facing Africa. She noted that the conflict in Ukraine had shifted the world’s attention away from these challenges, leaving the most vulnerable populations at risk.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and pro-Russian separatists seized control of parts of eastern Ukraine. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and has had a significant impact on the region’s stability and economy. It has also strained relations between Russia and many Western countries.

South Africa’s call for action from the BRICS grouping is significant, given the countries’ collective economic and political influence. As the world’s leading emerging economies, these countries have the potential to shape global policy and drive progress on key issues such as conflict resolution, poverty reduction, and climate change.

While the BRICS countries have previously expressed concern about the conflict in Ukraine, they have struggled to find a unified approach to resolving the crisis. This has led to criticism that the grouping lacks cohesion and is not living up to its potential.

South Africa’s call for action may help to galvanize the BRICS grouping and encourage its members to work together more effectively. This could have a significant impact on the global stage, as the countries collectively represent around 42% of the world’s population and 23% of its GDP.

The conflict in Ukraine is just one of many challenges facing the world today. However, as South Africa’s Pandor noted, it has diverted attention from other pressing issues, particularly in Africa. By working together to address the conflict, the BRICS grouping can help to restore stability to the region and refocus global attention on the challenges facing the most vulnerable populations.
