A prominent American lawmaker, Congresswoman Grace Meng, has taken a significant step towards recognizing the importance of Diwali, the festival of lights, by introducing a bill in the US Congress. The proposed legislation, known as the Diwali Day Act, aims to declare Diwali as a federal holiday, a move that has garnered widespread support from various communities across the country.

If passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden, the Diwali Day Act would make Diwali the 12th federally recognized holiday in the United States. Diwali holds immense cultural and religious significance for billions of people worldwide, and its recognition as a federal holiday would be a momentous achievement for the Indian diaspora and others who celebrate this festival.

During a virtual news conference held shortly after introducing the bill in the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Grace Meng emphasized the importance of Diwali. She stated, “Diwali is one of the most important days of the year for billions of people across the globe, and for countless families and communities in Queens, New York, and the United States.” Her words highlight the impact Diwali has not only on individuals but also on communities that observe and celebrate this festival.

The introduction of the Diwali Day Act represents a significant milestone in acknowledging the cultural diversity within the United States and promoting inclusivity. By designating Diwali as a federal holiday, the government would affirm its commitment to recognizing and celebrating the traditions and customs of various ethnic and religious groups that contribute to the rich tapestry of American society.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a five-day festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival typically involves lighting oil lamps, decorating homes, exchanging gifts, enjoying festive meals, and participating in prayers and religious ceremonies. Diwali brings families and communities together, fostering a sense of unity and joy.

The move to make Diwali a federal holiday has received widespread support from diverse communities throughout the United States. This initiative signifies the growing recognition and appreciation of the cultural contributions made by the Indian diaspora and other communities that celebrate Diwali. It also reflects the inclusive spirit of America, where different traditions and festivals are respected and honored.
