Inox Cinema in Srinagar is defying threats and extremist elements as it prepares to host the premiere of “Welcome to Kashmir” on Friday. This film, a first of its kind, sheds light on the lives of Kashmiri people and features actors from the Valley. The theater owner, Vikas Dhar, is filled with happiness as he sees his dream come true and brings the magic of cinema back to the people of Kashmir.

Vikas Dhar’s father, Vijay Dhar, was a prominent educationist in the region. Years ago, when terror groups banned or burned down many theaters in Srinagar, Vijay Dhar held onto a dream – a dream of bringing the joy of watching movies on the big screen back to the Kashmiri people. Now, after 32 years, Vikas Dhar has fulfilled his father’s dream by establishing Inox Cinema in Srinagar.

Opening a theater in Srinagar was not an easy task. The region has faced its share of challenges due to the prevailing security situation and the influence of extremist elements. However, despite the risks involved, Vikas Dhar remained determined to create a space where Kashmiris could enjoy the magic of cinema once again.

In September of last year, Inox Cinema finally became operational, marking a significant milestone for the people of Srinagar. The theater quickly gained popularity as it offered a unique experience for moviegoers, allowing them to enjoy the latest films on the big screen.

The upcoming premiere of “Welcome to Kashmir” is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the people in the region. The film aims to showcase the vibrant culture, traditions, and struggles of the Kashmiri people, providing an authentic representation of their lives. By featuring actors from the Valley, the movie adds a touch of local talent, further connecting with the audience on a deeper level.

Vikas Dhar expressed his joy at being able to offer this cinematic experience to the people of Kashmir. He believes that watching movies in theaters creates a sense of togetherness and shared emotions among the audience, something that cannot be replicated through streaming services or home viewing. Dhar understands the importance of the big screen experience and aims to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for movie lovers in Srinagar.

However, the road to hosting the premiere has not been without obstacles. The theater and its staff have faced threats from extremist elements who oppose the revival of cinema in the region. Despite these challenges, Dhar remains undeterred, determined to provide a platform for artists and filmmakers to showcase their work and for the community to come together and enjoy the magic of cinema.

The premiere of “Welcome to Kashmir” at Inox Cinema signifies a new chapter in the cultural landscape of Srinagar. It is a symbol of resilience, determination, and the power of art to bridge gaps and foster understanding. By defying the threats and extremist elements, Inox Cinema and Vikas Dhar are sending a message of hope and unity to the people of Kashmir.

As the curtains rise on Friday, the people of Srinagar will once again experience the joy of watching a film in the theater. In the darkness of the cinema hall, they will be transported to the enchanting world of “Welcome to Kashmir,” connecting with their own stories, struggles, and aspirations. And for Vikas Dhar, seeing the smiles on their faces and witnessing their delight will be the ultimate reward for his unwavering determination to bring back the magic of cinema to the Kashmiri people.
