Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the United States is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and result in significant developments in defense cooperation and India’s indigenous military industrial base, according to the Pentagon. The visit, scheduled for later this month, marks Prime Minister Modi’s first state visit to the US since President Joe Biden took office. The President and First Lady Jill Biden have extended an invitation to Modi, and a state dinner will be held on June 22 to honor the Indian Prime Minister.

During a panel discussion at the Center for New American Security, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, Ely Ratner, expressed anticipation for Prime Minister Modi’s visit, describing it as a historic occasion that will establish new benchmarks for the US-India relationship. The Pentagon expects the visit to yield significant outcomes, particularly in the areas of defense cooperation and India’s domestic military industry.

While specific details of the announcements were not provided, the Pentagon hinted at the possibility of “really big, historic, and exciting” announcements pertaining to defense collaboration. This implies a deepening of strategic ties between the two countries and potentially an increase in joint military exercises, technology transfers, and defense trade. The US has been actively seeking to bolster defense ties with India in recent years, recognizing its growing importance as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes at a crucial juncture when both countries are facing numerous regional and global challenges. The Indo-Pacific region is witnessing an increasingly assertive China, and both India and the US share concerns about Beijing’s aggressive behavior. Strengthening defense cooperation is seen as essential to maintain regional stability and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Furthermore, enhancing India’s indigenous military industrial base is a significant aspect of the bilateral discussions. India has been actively promoting its ‘Make in India’ initiative to boost domestic defense manufacturing capabilities and reduce its reliance on imported military hardware. Collaborative efforts with the US in this domain could lead to technology transfers, joint research and development projects, and investment in India’s defense industry.

The state dinner hosted by President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden is expected to be a highlight of the visit, symbolizing the warm personal rapport between the leaders of the two nations. The event will provide an opportunity for them to discuss a wide range of issues, including trade, climate change, and regional security.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US is poised to mark a significant milestone in the US-India relationship. The anticipated announcements on defense cooperation and support for India’s indigenous military industrial base demonstrate the growing strategic convergence between the two countries. As they navigate the complex geopolitical landscape, the US and India are set to deepen their partnership and work together to address common challenges and advance shared interests in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
