Arunachal Pradesh Family Mourns Death of Kamlo Mophuk

Kamlo Mophuk, a resident of Lazu village in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, reportedly left Tinsukia on May 16 to visit his daughter in Bengaluru. However, the journey turned tragic after he allegedly faced threats and assault from unidentified persons during the train trip.

According to family members, Mophuk became frightened and deboarded the train at Ongole Railway Station in Andhra Pradesh on May 18. He then approached Railway Police and local police officials seeking help.

However, relatives allege that authorities did not provide immediate assistance. They also claimed officials showed little urgency despite his condition and repeated pleas for support.

Distress Calls Raised Concern Among Family Members

Mophuk remained in contact with his family during the ordeal. On May 18, he informed his daughter Ngona Mophuk that unknown individuals were following him. He also mentioned that his phone battery was running low.

Later that night, he spoke with his wife around 11 pm. His final phone call came at around 8 am on May 19. After that, his phone became unreachable.

As communication stopped, his daughters in Bengaluru began searching for him. From May 19 to May 24, the family continuously contacted authorities and attempted to trace his location.

Minister’s Intervention Helped Intensify Search

The search operation reportedly gained momentum after Arunachal Pradesh Minister Wangki Lowang intervened and contacted officials in Andhra Pradesh.

Subsequently, police and forest teams used mobile location tracking to search nearby areas. Authorities later discovered Mophuk’s body near a cemetery in Prakasam district.

Although officials reportedly recovered the body on May 21, the family said authorities informed them only on May 23. Consequently, the delay has sparked criticism and public anger in Tirap district.

Family members stated that quicker action and timely communication might have improved the situation. They are now demanding a transparent inquiry into the incident.

Community Demands Fair Investigation

The incident has triggered mourning in Lazu village and other parts of Tirap district. Community members are demanding accountability regarding the alleged assault and the handling of Mophuk’s complaints.

In addition, residents are seeking answers about the delay in informing the family after the body’s recovery. Many people have also called for better protection and support systems for travellers from Northeast India.

So far, Andhra Pradesh Police and Railway authorities have not released an official statement regarding the case. Meanwhile, officials are awaiting the post-mortem report.

Importance of Northeast India Context

Arunachal Pradesh and other Northeast Indian states often depend on railway and interstate travel for education, employment, and family connections. Therefore, incidents involving travellers from the region frequently draw strong public attention and raise concerns about safety, communication, and administrative response.
