ARUNACHAL PRADESH: The 2,000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has reached a major milestone in its electro-mechanical work. Engineers successfully lowered the 395-metric-tonne generator stator for Unit 7. Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein announced the development on October 1. The NHPC project stands on the Subansiri River along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border. Once all eight units start operating, the project will reach its full 2,000-MW installed capacity.

Key Facts
- Project: Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project
- Capacity: 2,000 MW
- Location: Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border
- Developer: NHPC
- Latest work: Engineers lowered the Unit 7 generator stator
- Stator weight: 395 metric tonnes
- Generating units: 8 × 250 MW
- Expected annual generation: Around 7,422 million units
- Completion target: December, according to earlier Power Ministry indications
Major Progress on Unit 7
Engineers successfully lowered the 395-metric-tonne generator stator as part of the Unit 7 electro-mechanical works.
This milestone moves the project closer to Unit 7 commissioning. Moreover, further progress on the unit could help NHPC increase the project’s operational capacity.
Each of the project’s eight units can generate 250 MW. Therefore, all eight units together will provide the planned 2,000 MW capacity.
Chowna Mein Shares Project Update
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who handles the Power and Hydropower portfolios, shared the latest development on social media.
Mein said the milestone brings the project closer to commissioning Unit 7. He also highlighted the project’s eventual goal of reaching its full 2,000-MW capacity.
Meanwhile, NHPC continues work on the remaining generating units as the project moves toward full operation.
Three Units Have Reached 750 MW
The Subansiri Lower project has eight generating units in total. Each unit has a planned capacity of 250 MW.
By March this year, the project had commissioned two units. Subsequently, NHPC declared the third unit commercially operational from March 20.
As a result, the project reached a commissioned capacity of 750 MW.
Further commissioning of the remaining units will gradually increase the project’s total operational capacity.
Project Expected to Generate 7,422 Million Units
Once all eight units operate, the project could generate around 7,422 million units of electricity every year.
This large generation capacity could make the project an important source of hydropower for Northeast India. In addition, the project forms part of the region’s expanding power infrastructure.
Completion Target Remains in Focus
The Union Power Ministry had earlier indicated a December completion target for the entire project.
Therefore, the latest progress on Unit 7 represents an important step toward that target. However, NHPC still needs to complete additional work and commission the remaining units before the project reaches its full capacity.
What Happened at the Subansiri Lower Project?
Engineers lowered a 395-metric-tonne generator stator for Unit 7, marking a major step in the project’s electro-mechanical work.
How Much Capacity Will the Project Have?
The project will have a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW when all eight 250-MW units operate.
How Much Electricity Could the Project Generate?
The fully operational project could generate around 7,422 million units of electricity annually.
Who Is Developing the Project?
NHPC is developing the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project.
Where Is the Project Located?
The project sits on the Subansiri River along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border.
Location Context
The Subansiri Lower project represents a major hydropower development in Northeast India. Its location connects Arunachal Pradesh and Assam through a strategically important regional power project.
Furthermore, the project’s planned 2,000-MW capacity could significantly expand electricity generation in the region once NHPC commissions all eight units.
