GUWAHATI, ASSAM: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has announced an indefinite statewide agitation from October 2 over what he alleges is the delay in providing promised financial assistance to families affected by the recent floods in Assam. Gogoi said the agitation will begin on Gandhi Jayanti and continue until the government addresses the demands of flood victims.
The announcement follows a September 23 protest at Chachal in Guwahati, where flood-affected families demanded immediate relief and compensation. Gogoi has also sought additional compensation for families who suffered major losses during the floods.

He has also claimed that some severely affected families in Sivasagar and Charaideo have not received an additional ₹10,000 in special relief.
These figures and allegations have been raised by Gogoi and the Raijor Dal. The Assam government has previously reported several rounds of direct benefit transfers to flood-affected families.
Government Has Already Released Flood Assistance
The Assam government began distributing ₹15,000 in interim assistance to eligible flood-affected families in the worst-hit districts in August.
On August 3, the government said around 75,000 families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat were being provided assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer.
On August 17, another ₹47.93 crore was transferred to 31,951 families in the four districts, with each beneficiary receiving ₹15,000.
The government also reported a further ₹25.12 crore transfer to 16,746 families in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat on September 1.
September 23 Protest in Guwahati
The latest agitation announcement follows a major protest held at Chachal in Guwahati on September 23.
Flood-affected people from Upper Assam participated in the demonstration organised under the banner of Raijor Dal. Protesters demanded immediate assistance, greater compensation and action over alleged irregularities in relief distribution.
Gogoi has also demanded ₹10 lakh compensation per family for people who suffered major losses to their homes, belongings and other property during the floods.
What Is Akhil Gogoi Demanding?
Gogoi is demanding that all eligible flood-affected families receive the financial assistance announced by the government. He is also seeking additional compensation for families that suffered severe losses.
He has said the proposed agitation will continue until the demands concerning flood relief are addressed.
When Will the Agitation Begin?
The indefinite statewide agitation is scheduled to begin on October 2, 2026, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
Which Areas Are Affected?
The dispute centres on flood-affected areas of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat in Upper Assam.
These districts were among the areas that received government-announced interim financial assistance following the floods.
Government Response
The Assam government has not, in the latest reporting, issued a detailed response to Gogoi’s latest allegations concerning the specific families he says remain without relief.
The government has, however, reported multiple rounds of financial assistance to flood-affected households through DBT.
Location Context
Upper Assam’s Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts are important agricultural and rural areas of the Northeast. Flooding in these districts can affect homes, crops, livelihoods and local infrastructure, making timely relief and rehabilitation a major regional concern.
