The German envoy to India, Philipp Ackermann, has criticized the controversial cartoon published by the German magazine, Der Spiegel, depicting India’s population overtaking China’s. He stated that the cartoon was neither funny nor appropriate and invited the cartoonist to take a ride on the Delhi Metro with him to witness the state-of-the-art railway system in India.

The cartoon attempted to depict a comparison of “development levels” between India and China by showing an overloaded Indian train with passengers both inside and on top of it overtaking a “sophisticated” Chinese bullet train with two drivers inside. The cartoon drew widespread criticism, with many Indian users feeling that the West’s portrayal of India is far from accurate.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar also condemned Der Spiegel for its racist tone in the cartoon. He tweeted, “Notwithstanding your attempt at mocking India… it’s not smart to bet against India under PM @narendramodi ji….In a few years, India’s economy will be bigger than Germany’s.”

The German envoy’s remarks come as a refreshing change amidst the controversy surrounding the cartoon. He praised the Delhi Metro’s quality, comparing it favorably to many German trains. The comments by Ackermann highlight the need to understand and acknowledge the positive developments in India, rather than perpetuating outdated stereotypes and negative perceptions.

It is important to recognize that India’s economy has been growing at an unprecedented rate and is projected to continue doing so in the future. As India continues to make strides in various fields, including technology and infrastructure, it is imperative that the international community recognizes these advancements and works towards building stronger partnerships with India.

The controversy surrounding the Der Spiegel cartoon serves as a reminder of the need for greater sensitivity and understanding when it comes to depicting other countries and cultures. It is essential to move beyond outdated stereotypes and recognize the progress being made by countries such as India.
