Assam drug crackdown efforts have intensified, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma saying narcotics worth around Rs 300 crore were destroyed during the first 100 days of the BJP-led government in the state.

Sarma shared the figures on August 28 while highlighting the government’s anti-narcotics campaign. He said the destruction of seized drugs was part of a wider effort to disrupt trafficking networks and prevent illegal substances from reaching communities.

The latest action comes amid continued seizures across Assam. Authorities have been targeting drug trafficking routes, supply networks and suspected traffickers as part of the state’s wider anti-drug policy.

Assam drug crackdown uses dedicated disposal facility

A key part of the latest Assam drug crackdown is the use of the state’s first dedicated narcotics incinerator at Daulashal in Nalbari district.

The facility was inaugurated in July during a statewide drug disposal drive. It was installed with assistance from the Centre and is intended to allow seized narcotics to be disposed of through a controlled scientific process.

Sarma said the drugs destroyed during the first 100 days were worth about Rs 300 crore. He also posted that the crackdown would continue, stressing seizures, arrests and the dismantling of drug networks.

The use of a dedicated disposal facility marks a move towards more systematic handling of seized narcotics after legal procedures have been completed.

Recent seizures add to Assam drug crackdown

The latest figures follow several major narcotics seizures in Assam and the wider Northeast.

In a separate 10-day crackdown covering nine districts, authorities reported seizures valued at Rs 472.51 crore. The haul included 30.7 kg of heroin and 5,499 kg of ganja, according to figures cited in reports on the government’s campaign.

The figures underline the scale of the challenge facing enforcement agencies. However, seizure values and destroyed-drug values represent different stages of the enforcement process and should not be treated as the same measure.

In July, Assam also began a statewide exercise to destroy seized narcotics worth Rs 472.51 crore over 10 days. The programme was launched at the 14th Assam Police Battalion campus in Daulashal, Nalbari.

New trafficking routes raise concern

The Assam drug crackdown has also gained importance because of concerns over changing trafficking routes.

Sarma recently warned of a new route from Myanmar through Arunachal Pradesh into Assam’s Tinsukia district. He said traffickers appeared to be avoiding the traditional Moreh route and using alternative pathways.

Such developments have increased attention on Assam’s location as a transit point for narcotics entering northeastern India.

Assam drug crackdown builds on five-year campaign

The current Assam drug crackdown builds on an anti-narcotics campaign launched after Sarma became chief minister in 2021.

State government figures cited earlier this year said Assam had seized drugs worth Rs 2,919 crore over five years. More than Rs 2,170 crore worth of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances had also been destroyed since May 2021, while more than 23,000 arrests had been made in drug-related cases.

The campaign has involved Assam Police, central agencies and other enforcement authorities. The state has also stressed cooperation with neighbouring states and stronger checks along routes used for illegal drug movement.

Assam drug crackdown faces a continuing challenge

The destruction of seized narcotics removes substances from circulation, but the continuing seizures show that trafficking remains a significant challenge.

Therefore, enforcement agencies face the task of not only intercepting consignments but also identifying the networks behind them. Cross-border movement, changing routes and organised trafficking can make sustained enforcement difficult.

For the Assam government, the latest destruction drive is being presented as part of a broader zero-tolerance approach. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing investigations and seizures to disrupt supply chains.

The Assam drug crackdown is likely to remain a major law-and-order priority as the state seeks to curb trafficking and prevent narcotics from reaching local markets. The government’s latest figures indicate a continued focus on seizures, arrests and the disposal of confiscated drugs.
