Residents of Bhotgaon in Assam’s Kokrajhar district took to the streets to protest the worsening condition of the Kokrajhar-Dhubri road. The rally, held on May 15, was part of the growing Bhotgaon road protest, where people demanded immediate action from authorities to resolve the severe waterlogging that has plagued the area for weeks.

According to protestors, the stretch near Bhotgaon remains submerged after every downpour, causing massive disruption to daily life. Roads become impassable, and many vehicles have broken down due to standing water.

Growing Impact of the Bhotgaon Road Crisis

The protesters blamed the Public Works Department (PWD) for its inaction. They also pointed out that despite several complaints and letters, the department has failed to improve drainage in the area.

Speaking to reporters, one resident said, “We are not asking for anything luxurious. We just want a dry, motorable road.”

Clearly, the Bhotgaon road protest has become a symbol of the community’s frustration and demand for accountability.

Protesters Issue Ultimatum Over Highway Neglect

The rally ended with an ultimatum. Organizers gave the administration 10 days to start repair work or face intensified protests.

This protest was peaceful, but leaders warned that residents would not remain silent if the situation continues. Moreover, several youth organizations and traders’ unions have extended support to the movement, increasing pressure on the authorities.

Kokrajhar-Dhubri Route Holds Strategic Importance

This route is more than just a local link. It connects two major districts in Assam and serves as a key route for goods and daily commuters. Consequently, its poor condition has hurt local businesses and affected school attendance.

Truck drivers are now avoiding this route due to the risk of breakdowns. Meanwhile, commuters report delays, especially during rush hours.

Core Demands of Bhotgaon Road Protesters

During the Bhotgaon road protest, residents highlighted two core demands:

  • Installation of a reliable drainage system to prevent recurring waterlogging
  • Permanent road repairs, not temporary patchwork that washes away with rain

They added that temporary gravel fillings have done little to fix the actual problem. A long-term plan, including proper engineering and materials, is what the area needs.

Government Responds, But Locals Remain Skeptical

After the protest, local PWD officials visited the site and assured residents that a drainage plan would be proposed soon. However, many remain unconvinced.

In the past, similar promises were made but not fulfilled. Therefore, the protesters said they would wait and watch for real progress within the 10-day window.

The Bhotgaon road protest reflects a growing concern in Assam over neglected infrastructure. As monsoon season nears, residents hope that this time, their voices won’t be ignored and that real change will finally come.
