Fresh Violence in Tiporam
The latest incident followed attacks on three Liangmai Naga villages — Tapon Khullen, Tapon Khunou and Makui Tiporam — on Tuesday.
According to officials, the attacks involved gunfire and resulted in at least 10 houses being set ablaze. A village church pastor reportedly sustained bullet injuries during the violence.
A Tiporam resident said five houses were allegedly burnt on Tuesday and armed men threatened to set more houses on fire.
The resident claimed that another 25 houses were allegedly torched on Wednesday before the attackers left the area. Five of the houses reportedly belonged to members of the Nepali community.
Villagers Seek Shelter
Residents said villagers had earlier been evacuated from Tiporam to Makui following the violence.
They reportedly returned to Tiporam on Tuesday but allegedly came under gunfire. The villagers then returned to a relief centre in Makui for safety.
Tiporam and Makui are located around 15 kilometres apart.
Residents also alleged that security forces were informed about the burning of houses but claimed that no immediate action was taken.
Rising Tensions in Manipur
The latest violence adds to continuing tensions between communities in parts of Manipur.
Reports indicate that at least 17 people from the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities have been killed in separate incidents since May 13.
An August 27 ambush reportedly killed four Naga civilians. Three Kuki civilians were also reportedly killed in an August 31 attack along the Imphal-Tamenglong road in Kangpokpi and Tamenglong districts.
Despite the series of attacks and retaliatory incidents, no group has officially claimed responsibility for the violence.
