BJP Claims Role in Manipur Peace Efforts

Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh said on September 14 that the BJP is the only political party making efforts to restore peace in the state.

While addressing party workers, Singh said the BJP was working to bring communities together and support free movement across Manipur.

The chief minister described the violence that began on May 3, 2023, as “most unfortunate.” He said the continuing crisis had overshadowed the work carried out by the BJP government.

Singh Acknowledges Public Anger

Singh acknowledged that people naturally blame the ruling party for the situation.

“While we did not create this crisis, it is natural for the people to blame us for it,” he said, while asserting that the BJP was working towards reconciliation and dialogue.

He said the party’s approach was to protect all 36 communities in Manipur. He also stressed the need to restore normal movement across the state.

The remarks come as peace, security and relations between communities remain major concerns in Manipur.

Chief Minister Highlights ILP and NRC

During his address, Singh referred to previous periods of unrest in the state. He particularly mentioned the prolonged agitation over the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP).

According to the chief minister, the BJP government eventually introduced the ILP in Manipur as a measure to protect indigenous people.

Singh also discussed the demand for the National Register of Citizens (NRC). He said implementing the NRC was part of the BJP’s manifesto.

He recalled that the Manipur Assembly, under former chief minister N Biren Singh, passed a resolution in August 2022 seeking implementation of the NRC in the state.

The comments highlighted the party’s stated position on indigenous rights, identity and protection of local communities.

BJP Workers Asked to Reach Out to Youth

Singh urged BJP workers to explain the government’s work to the public.

He said the ongoing conflict had overshadowed the initiatives taken by the party. Therefore, workers needed to make greater efforts to communicate with people.

The chief minister particularly emphasized outreach to young people.

He asked party workers to make the youth aware of the BJP government’s initiatives and its efforts to address issues affecting the state.

Manipur’s Importance in Northeast India

Manipur is a strategically important state in Northeast India. It shares international borders with Myanmar and has diverse communities with distinct cultural identities.

The state’s ongoing conflict has made peace, community reconciliation and public movement important issues for residents and the wider Northeast region.
