Performance Scheduled at National School of Drama

The group will stage its acclaimed Shumang Leela production “Mutlaroidaba Machu” on February 10 at the National School of Drama (NSD), Mandi House. Celebrated playwright Manaobi MM wrote the play, which has earned recognition for its strong narrative and social commentary.

The performance forms part of the festival’s curated programme that showcases diverse theatrical traditions and original storytelling.

Story Explores Social Change and Gender Issues

“Mutlaroidaba Machu” traces the journey of two sisters, Ayeengbi and Thabatombi, as they navigate social and personal struggles while moving from rural Manipur to urban Imphal. Through their experiences, the play explores themes of migration, identity, and survival in a changing society.

In addition, the narrative addresses pressing social issues such as drug and substance abuse, depicted through the character Ningthemba. The production also sheds light on deep-rooted misogyny, challenging traditional attitudes and gender discrimination.

By blending strong storytelling with social realism, the play reflects the evolving concerns of Manipuri society.

Direction and Performances

Veteran theatre practitioner Lai Ibotombi directs the production and also appears on stage. His direction emphasizes the traditional Shumang Leela format while integrating contemporary performance elements.

The cast features Lai Ibotombi, Ibohanbi Sorokhaibam, Naorem Tamphasana, Yumnam Arun, Athokpam Santosh, Sarangthem Henary, Ngashepam Robertson, and Ksh. Ronaldo Chingkhu in male roles. The female roles are portrayed by Senjam Deepson, Bishesh Huirem, and Wangkhem Herojit.

The ensemble has received praise for its expressive performances and disciplined stage movement, both central to Shumang Leela’s open-air tradition.

Live Music Enhances the Production

Music plays a vital role in enhancing the emotional depth of the play. The musical ensemble includes Konjengbam Romesh as the male vocalist and Vicky Likmabam as the female vocalist.

Instrumental support comes from Moirangthem Robert on guitar and violin, Seram Romajit on flute, L. Surchand on keyboard, and N. Girish on tabla. Together, the musicians provide a rich soundscape that complements the narrative.

Showcasing Manipur’s Cultural Heritage

Participation in Bharat Rang Mahotsav offers the troupe an important platform to showcase Manipur’s cultural heritage to national and international audiences. Theatre observers note that Shumang Leela’s minimalistic style and strong social messaging resonate well with contemporary theatre lovers.

Members of the Peace Maker Artistses’ Association expressed hope that their performance would foster greater appreciation for Manipuri theatre and encourage dialogue on social issues.

Cultural Exchange at National Platform

The 25th edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav continues to serve as a space for cultural exchange and artistic collaboration. The inclusion of Shumang Leela in the festival lineup highlights the diversity of India’s theatrical traditions.

With their upcoming performance, the Peace Maker Artistses’ Association aims to leave a lasting impression and strengthen Manipur’s presence on the national cultural map.
