Tourism Footfall Rises in Mizoram

Mizoram welcomed more than 6.75 lakh visitors during the first eight months of 2026.

Domestic tourists made up the overwhelming majority of visitors. Meanwhile, more than 11,000 foreign tourists entered the state during the same period.

The latest figures show a significant increase compared with previous years. Mizoram recorded 5,24,784 tourist arrivals during 2024-25 and 9,80,618 arrivals during 2025-26.

Better Connectivity Supports Tourism

Officials have linked the rise in tourist arrivals partly to improvements in transport infrastructure.

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line has played an important role by connecting Aizawl with the national railway network.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38-km railway line on September 13, 2025. Since then, the improved rail connection has made travel to Mizoram more convenient for visitors.

However, officials also credit the state’s growing eco-tourism appeal and tourism promotion efforts for the rising visitor numbers.

Government Strengthens Tourism Regulations

The Mizoram government has introduced several measures to improve tourism services and visitor safety.

These include the Mizoram Responsible Tourism Policy, 2020, the Mizoram (Registration of Tourist Trade) Act, 2020, and related rules.

Furthermore, the Tourism Department works with churches and civil society organisations to encourage tourism across different parts of the state.

The government aims to develop tourism while protecting Mizoram’s environment, culture and local communities.

Anthurium Festival Promotes Reiek

The tourism push gained further momentum with the conclusion of the three-day Anthurium Festival at Reiek Tourist Resort.

Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar said Mizoram needs more tourist destinations and regular events to attract visitors throughout the year.

The festival returned after a two-year gap. The Tourism and Horticulture departments jointly organised the event.

According to the minister, the government plans to promote events such as the Winter Festival, Hnahsin Kut and Leitlangpui Music Festival.

Officials also plan to promote destinations and events such as Sakawrhmuituai sunset and Tlaizawng Paradise.

Focus on Local Tourism

Hmar also highlighted the importance of tourism within Mizoram.

He said increased travel by residents between different parts of the state could support local businesses and generate more economic activity.

Therefore, the government wants both domestic visitors from outside Mizoram and local residents to explore the state’s tourist destinations.

Festival Highlights Mizoram’s Culture

Horticulture Minister C Lalsawivunga inaugurated the Anthurium Festival on October 1.

The event featured a wide range of activities designed to showcase Mizoram’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Visitors took part in trekking, cave expeditions and cable footbridge activities. The programme also included visits to Film City, indigenous games and rifle shooting.

Cultural programmes at Ailawng and Reiek added further attraction to the festival.

Young Mizo Association branches and educational institutions presented cultural performances highlighting Mizo traditions.
