Mizoram Government Issues Warning
Health Minister Lalrinpuii issued the warning after an inter-ministerial meeting in Aizawl on Monday.
Excise Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, officials from the Health and Excise and Narcotics departments, and representatives of the Central Young Mizo Association attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the growing abuse of pharmaceutical drugs and discussed ways to strengthen enforcement across Mizoram.
Lalrinpuii said the government would not hesitate to cancel drug licences when dealers violate the law or misuse their licences for illegal sales.
Codeine Syrup Emerges as Major Concern
According to Lalrinpuii, codeine-based cough syrup has become the most widely abused pharmaceutical drug in the state.
She said large quantities of the medicine allegedly enter Mizoram and reach consumers without prescriptions, despite its prescription-only status.
Moreover, the minister said the problem now affects young people, adults and even children.
She also expressed concern over allegations that some medicine dealers and people posing as medical representatives may have joined the illegal trade.
Authorities have reportedly found that drugs with abuse potential have reached even remote parts of Mizoram.
Fake Labels Used to Hide Codeine Syrup
The meeting also discussed cases involving the alleged replacement of labels on codeine syrup bottles.
According to the minister, some bottles allegedly carried labels belonging to other medicines to conceal the actual contents.
Authorities have seized several such bottles during enforcement operations. Police have also arrested people allegedly connected with the illegal pharmaceutical trade.
Additionally, authorities have arrested and prosecuted several people, including licensed medicine dealers, over alleged irregularities in the procurement and sale of medicines.
Government Plans Tougher Scrutiny
Lalrinpuii said authorities must protect legitimate patients while preventing pharmaceutical drugs from entering the illegal market.
She noted that tighter restrictions have made some medicines harder to obtain through legitimate pharmacies for patients who genuinely need them.
However, she stressed that dealers cannot use this situation to profit from medicines that carry a risk of abuse.
The minister warned that authorities would revoke licences when dealers fail to follow legal requirements.
Furthermore, she said the government would apply strict scrutiny before issuing new drug licences.
Departments Asked to Step Up Action
Lalrinpuii directed the Excise and Narcotics department to continue its investigation into the illegal pharmaceutical trade.
She also urged the Food and Drug Administration and the Central YMA to maintain follow-up action and strengthen cooperation.
Meanwhile, the government aims to improve coordination between enforcement agencies and community organisations.
The latest measures come amid concerns about changing patterns of substance abuse in Mizoram.
