Nagaland Strengthens Action Against Single-Use Plastic

The Nagaland Home Department has directed village authorities throughout the state to ensure strict implementation of the ban on single-use plastic.

The order aims to reduce plastic pollution and improve waste management. Moreover, it reinforces existing environmental regulations already notified by the government.

Directive Issued Under Existing Rules

According to the department, the latest instruction follows Supreme Court directives and the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021.

Furthermore, the government has reminded local authorities of previous notifications issued by the Urban Development Department. Therefore, village councils and local bodies have been asked to take active steps to enforce the ban.

List of Prohibited Plastic Items

The government has reiterated that the manufacture, sale, and use of several plastic products remain prohibited across the state.

These include plastic carry bags, plastic cutlery, thermocol products, polythene materials, nylon items, and PVC-based products.

Additionally, authorities have been instructed to monitor markets and public places to ensure compliance with the regulations.

Ban on Flex Banners and Plastic Posters Continues

The order also reaffirmed restrictions on flex banners and plastic posters.

Officials stated that such materials contribute significantly to environmental pollution. Therefore, alternative eco-friendly materials are encouraged for public events and awareness campaigns.

Restrictions on Plastic Water Bottles

Another important provision relates to official government functions.

The use of packaged drinking water bottles with a capacity below 20 litres has been prohibited during official events. As a result, departments and organizers will need to adopt more sustainable alternatives.

The measure is expected to reduce the large volume of plastic waste generated during meetings, conferences, and public programmes.

Village Authorities Asked to Ensure Compliance

The Home Department has directed all village authorities to strictly implement the rules within their jurisdictions.

Furthermore, local bodies have been asked to raise awareness among residents regarding the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Officials believe community participation will play a key role in ensuring the success of the ban.

Focus on Environmental Protection

The move reflects the state’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Moreover, reducing plastic waste can help protect rivers, forests, and ecosystems across Nagaland. Consequently, stricter enforcement is expected to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Nagaland is known for its rich biodiversity, forests, and unique ecological resources. As an important state in Northeast India, environmental protection remains a priority for preserving its natural heritage and supporting sustainable development.
