Manipur Cabinet Adopts Austerity Measures

The Manipur government has decided to implement several austerity measures to reduce expenditure. The cabinet took the decision during a meeting held on May 29 at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

According to an official statement, the measures were introduced in response to prevailing global challenges. Moreover, the cabinet said the decision aligns with an appeal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Under the new measures, the government will reduce the size of VIP convoys. Additionally, it will introduce work-from-home arrangements in suitable cases.

Furthermore, government-funded foreign travel will remain frozen. The administration will also limit non-essential expenditure across departments.

Cabinet Approves 173 ANM Posts

Alongside the austerity measures, the cabinet approved the recruitment of 173 Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) posts.

The positions will be created under the Family Welfare Department. Importantly, the recruitment will receive financial support from the Central government.

As a result, the move is expected to strengthen healthcare services and improve the availability of frontline health workers in the state.

Age Relaxation for Government Recruitment

The cabinet also approved a two-year age relaxation for recruitments that are yet to be notified by government departments.

This decision is expected to benefit many job aspirants. Moreover, it will provide additional opportunities for candidates who may have crossed the usual age limits due to delays in recruitment processes.

Compensation Approved for Highway Expansion

In another significant decision, the government approved compensation rates for land acquisition related to two major highway projects.

The projects include the expansion of the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway and the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway.

According to the cabinet, the approval will help speed up project implementation. Consequently, the improved highways are expected to enhance connectivity and support economic growth in the state.

Power Sector Reforms Get Approval

The cabinet also approved the rationalisation of posts under the Manipur State Power Company Limited.

The move aims to improve promotional opportunities for employees. Furthermore, it is expected to strengthen administrative efficiency within the power sector.

Water Supply Project Extended

Another key decision was the extension of the New Development Bank-funded Manipur Water Supply Project.

The project plays an important role in improving access to safe drinking water. Therefore, the extension is expected to support ongoing infrastructure development and public welfare initiatives.

Loktak Experience Project Cleared

The cabinet further approved the Tourism Department’s proposal to implement the Loktak Experience Project.

The initiative aims to develop Loktak Lake into an iconic tourist destination. Additionally, it seeks to attract more visitors and promote sustainable tourism in the region.

Officials believe the project will generate economic opportunities and strengthen Manipur’s tourism sector.

Location Context

Manipur is a strategically important state in Northeast India. It serves as a gateway to Southeast Asia under India’s Act East Policy. Therefore, investments in infrastructure, tourism, healthcare, and public services are vital for the state’s long-term growth and regional connectivity.
