Nagaland’s draft electoral roll has excluded nearly 1.59 lakh names from the previous voter list following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The draft roll was published on September 20 after a statewide enumeration exercise conducted from August 16 to September 14. The electorate has fallen from about 13.57 lakh in the earlier roll to around 11.99 lakh in the draft list.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office identified deceased, absent or shifted voters and duplicate registrations during the exercise. Voters whose names are missing can file claims and objections until October 20.

Why Did the Electoral Roll Shrink?

According to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, 29,944 electors from the earlier list were identified as deceased. Around 1.23 lakh were placed in the absent, shifted or other category.
This category includes people who had enrolled as voters in other states or Union Territories, could not be traced during verification, did not submit their enumeration forms by the deadline or were unwilling to register.
The revision also identified 5,059 voters who were enrolled at more than one location. Their names are subject to correction so that the electoral record reflects a single valid registration.
Claims and Objections Open Until October 20
The publication of the draft roll does not end the revision process. Voters whose names are missing can submit claims and objections between September 20 and October 20. AppCEO
