The Rising People’s Party (RPP) formally merged with the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) during a programme held in Kohima on Saturday. As a result, the merger marked an important political realignment in Nagaland.

Party leaders described the move as an effort to strengthen regional political unity. Moreover, they said the merger would reinforce the NPF’s commitment to issues concerning the people of Nagaland.

CM Neiphiu Rio Stresses Naga Unity

Speaking at the programme, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said the Naga political issue continues to remain the foremost priority of the NPF.

Furthermore, he appealed to Nagas living across different regions to remain united. According to the Chief Minister, greater unity can help create a favourable environment for an early and lasting solution to the long-standing political issue.

Background of the Rising People’s Party

The Rising People’s Party was formed on October 2, 2020, under the leadership of Joel Naga. Later, the Election Commission of India registered the party in June 2021.

The RPP entered state politics by promoting clean governance and electoral reforms. However, the party failed to win any seat in the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections. At present, it has no representation in the 60-member Nagaland Legislative Assembly or in urban local bodies.

Merger Expected to Strengthen Regional Politics

Political observers believe the merger could consolidate regional political forces under the NPF banner. Consequently, the party may strengthen its organisational network and political influence across Nagaland.

In addition, the development highlights the continued importance of regional parties in addressing issues specific to the state and the wider Naga community.

Focus Remains on the Naga Political Issue

The Naga political issue has remained at the centre of Nagaland’s political discourse for decades. Therefore, political leaders continue to stress dialogue, peace, and cooperation among all stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the NPF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Naga identity and supporting efforts to achieve a peaceful and lasting political settlement.

Location Context

Nagaland is a key state in Northeast India where the Naga political issue has shaped regional politics for decades. Therefore, political developments in the state often influence peace initiatives, governance, and regional cooperation across the Northeast.
