Aircraft Took Off From Jorhat Air Base

According to defence sources, the fighter jet began its training sortie from the Jorhat air base in upper Assam. During the flight, the aircraft crashed around 60 kilometres away in a remote part of Karbi Anglong district.

The rugged terrain and dense forest cover made access to the crash site difficult. As a result, search teams needed several hours to locate the wreckage.

IAF Confirms Death of Two Pilots

The Indian Air Force confirmed the deaths of the two pilots in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). The pilots were identified as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar.

Both officers suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The Air Force expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In its message, the IAF said all personnel stand firmly with the families of the deceased officers during this difficult time.

The force also paid tribute to the courage and dedication of the two pilots who died while performing their duty.

Search Teams Locate Debris in Remote Area

A defence spokesperson in Guwahati said rescue teams located the wreckage around 1 a.m. on Friday. The Indian Air Force led the search operation with support from local police and the civil administration.

Villagers from nearby areas also helped the teams reach the crash site.

Because of the difficult terrain, rescue teams trekked through forested hills to reach the location. Officials later found scattered debris from the aircraft across the crash area.

Authorities have now secured the site to assist the ongoing investigation.

Investigation Underway

The Indian Air Force has launched a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Officials have not ruled out any possibilities so far.

Investigators will examine flight data, maintenance records, and technical details of the aircraft. They will also analyse the circumstances of the training mission.

The Sukhoi-30 MKI is one of the most advanced fighter jets in the IAF fleet. The twin-engine aircraft performs air superiority and multi-role combat missions. It also plays a key role in regular training exercises.

However, aviation experts say training flights can involve complex manoeuvres. These operations require high levels of skill and precision.

The investigation will help determine what led to the accident and how authorities can prevent similar incidents in the future.

Nation Mourns the Loss

The deaths of Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar have deeply saddened the defence fraternity. Tributes have begun to pour in from officials, colleagues, and citizens across the country.

Many people praised the dedication and service of the two officers who gave their lives while serving the nation.
