Detailed News Report

Armed assailants attacked a group of Naga Village Guards (NVGs) at Ringui Horei Kaphung in Ukhrul district early Monday, injuring at least six members. Soon after the incident, local authorities shifted the injured to nearby medical facilities, where doctors confirmed that all victims remain in stable condition.

Following the attack, the Tangkhul Naga Long strongly condemned the violence. The organisation described the incident as a premeditated and coordinated assault. Moreover, it alleged that Kuki armed groups carried out the attack, raising fresh concerns over security in Naga-dominated regions.

In addition, the committee highlighted what it called a recurring pattern of violence targeting Naga villages and local defence volunteers. It pointed out that the latest incident occurred shortly after recent combing operations conducted by central security forces in the region. Therefore, the group questioned the effectiveness of such operations in preventing armed attacks.

Furthermore, the organisation cited earlier incidents to support its claims. It referred to a combing operation at Lungter Hills on April 28, followed by an armed attack on the same day. It also mentioned reported firing incidents targeting civilians along National Highway-202 near Yaolen village on May 2. Consequently, these developments have intensified concerns over safety in the area.

The committee also accused security forces of dismantling defensive bunkers set up by NVGs in certain locations. For instance, it alleged that forces removed bunkers at New Haven while leaving suspected militant positions untouched. Similarly, it referred to Thoyee village, where local defence structures were reportedly dismantled after an earlier attack.

Meanwhile, the Tangkhul Naga Long maintained that NVGs operate strictly in self-defence to protect their communities. It argued that weakening such local defence mechanisms exposes civilians to further risks. Additionally, the group expressed concern over possible leaks of sensitive information regarding NVG positions, which could enable repeated attacks.

Finally, the organisation termed the situation a serious threat to civilian safety in Manipur’s hill districts. It urged the Government of India to ensure impartial security operations and restore public confidence. It also called for immediate steps to prevent further escalation of violence in the region.
