In a recent development, the University of Delhi’s School of Open Learning (SOL) has issued a cautionary statement to its students, urging them to refrain from subscribing to “unauthorised” YouTube channels and joining unofficial WhatsApp groups. The advisory comes in response to concerns over the dissemination of fake news and misinformation through these platforms. The SOL emphasized the need for students to exercise caution and rely on credible sources for accurate information.

The cautionary statement follows an incident that took place on June 3, where chaos ensued at the SOL center. The event, organized to distribute degrees to a limited number of graduating students, was abruptly called off as scores of students gathered at the venue with the misconception that all attendees would be conferred with a degree.

Speaking to PTI (Press Trust of India), Payal Mago, the Director of Campus of Open Learning, shed light on the situation. She explained that the SOL had planned to distribute 75,000 degrees during the fair, but it was intended to be done on an appointment basis. Students were required to fill out a Google form in advance to secure an appointment for degree collection. Moreover, the distribution of degrees was scheduled to take place in batches, ensuring an organized process.

However, a significant number of students, including those from previous years, disregarded the instructions and arrived at the venue expecting to collect their degrees without an appointment. This resulted in overcrowding and confusion, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the event.

To prevent such incidents and misinformation from circulating, the SOL has taken a proactive step by cautioning students against unauthorised YouTube channels and unofficial WhatsApp groups. These channels and groups have been identified as potential sources of fake news and misinformation, which can create confusion and misguide students.

The advisory emphasizes the importance of relying on official communication channels and credible sources for obtaining accurate information. It encourages students to verify any information they come across through authorized university websites, official announcements, and trustworthy news sources. By doing so, students can ensure that they are well-informed and avoid falling victim to false narratives or misleading claims.

The University of Delhi’s SOL is committed to providing quality education and maintaining a transparent communication system with its students. The cautionary statement serves as a reminder for students to exercise critical thinking and discernment while navigating the digital realm, particularly in an era where misinformation can spread rapidly.

By promoting responsible information consumption, the SOL aims to create an environment where students can access reliable information, make informed decisions, and actively contribute to their academic and personal growth. It is hoped that through this advisory, students will develop a heightened awareness of the potential risks associated with consuming information from unauthorised sources, thus fostering a culture of responsible digital citizenship.

The University of Delhi’s School of Open Learning has taken a proactive stance in addressing the issue of fake news and misinformation by cautioning students against subscribing to unauthorised YouTube channels and joining unofficial WhatsApp groups. By urging students to rely on credible sources and official communication channels, the SOL aims to empower students to make well-informed decisions and prevent the spread of misinformation within its academic community.
