A Mayur Borgohain complaint has drawn attention in Assam amid allegations concerning remarks linked to violence. The matter has raised questions about the conduct of the BJP leader, who is now the MLA representing Nazira in Sivasagar district.

However, available reporting does not independently establish that Borgohain made a statement explicitly supporting violence. The latest allegation should therefore be treated as a complaint and not as a proven finding against the legislator.

Mayur Borgohain complaint raises questions

The controversy comes against the backdrop of earlier allegations involving Borgohain and violence against workers in Upper Assam. In August 2024, nine Bengali-speaking Muslim workers filed a police complaint alleging that they were assaulted and threatened while working at a construction project linked to Borgohain.

The workers alleged that a group of masked men attacked them and ordered them to leave the area. They also claimed that around Rs 15 lakh in wages remained unpaid. The allegations were reported by several news organisations, while Borgohain denied involvement and described the claims as politically motivated.

An FIR was subsequently registered in connection with the workers’ allegations. Reports said the case included provisions relating to unlawful assembly, rioting, causing hurt, promoting enmity and criminal intimidation.

Earlier allegations remain part of the debate

The Mayur Borgohain complaint has to be viewed separately from the 2024 case. The earlier allegations concerned an alleged physical assault, while the present controversy relates to claims about remarks and their interpretation.

That distinction is important. A complaint records allegations made by a complainant. It does not, by itself, establish that the accused committed an offence.

In the 2024 case, the workers said the attack occurred during a period of heightened tension surrounding demands for Bengali-speaking Muslims to leave parts of Upper Assam. Reports also linked the broader atmosphere to controversial remarks made at the time by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about the community.

What the earlier FIR alleged

The United Opposition Forum later included allegations concerning Borgohain in a complaint against Sarma. The document alleged that Borgohain had physically assaulted labourers and suggested that the incident contributed to an atmosphere capable of producing communal unrest.

The allegations were strongly worded, but they remained claims contained in a political complaint. News reports did not establish the allegations as judicially proven facts.

Borgohain is now Nazira MLA

Borgohain’s political position has since changed. He won the 2026 Assam Assembly election from Nazira on a BJP ticket, according to election records, making him the constituency’s current legislator.

His election victory gives the latest controversy added political significance. At the same time, his present position does not change the legal standard that allegations must be investigated and established through due process.

Moreover, Borgohain has remained active in constituency matters. During the recent floods in Upper Assam, he was involved in discussions on relief and the damage caused by the Dikhow River flooding.

Need for clear evidence and due process

The Mayur Borgohain complaint also highlights the importance of distinguishing political criticism from established legal findings. Claims involving violence can have serious consequences, particularly when they involve elected representatives.

Therefore, any investigation into the complaint should establish what was said, the circumstances in which the remarks were made and whether they crossed any legal threshold.

Authorities would also need to examine supporting material, including recordings, witness accounts or other evidence, if such material has been submitted with the complaint. Until that process is complete, the allegations should remain clearly identified as allegations.

Controversy puts spotlight on public conduct

The Mayur Borgohain complaint has renewed scrutiny of the BJP MLA’s public conduct and his earlier controversies. It also comes at a time when political statements involving identity, migration and community relations remain sensitive issues in Assam.

Finally, the focus will remain on whether authorities take up the complaint and what evidence emerges during any inquiry. For now, the allegations against Borgohain should not be treated as established fact.

The wider issue also underlines the need for elected representatives to exercise caution when discussing violence or community tensions. Any complaint involving such remarks requires a fair examination, regardless of the political position of the person involved.
