Assam tourist places are gaining fresh attention as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continues to promote the state as a major destination for domestic and international visitors. From the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati to the forests of Manas, Assam offers a mix of pilgrimage, wildlife, culture and history.

The state’s tourism push has also gathered momentum in 2026. The government has set a target of placing Assam among India’s top 10 states in tourist footfall, while plans include a new homestay policy and upgraded tourism infrastructure.

Kamakhya remains a spiritual landmark

Among Assam tourist places, the Kamakhya Temple holds a distinctive position. Located on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, the shrine is one of the country’s major Shakti pilgrimage centres and attracts devotees throughout the year.

The temple is also closely associated with the annual Ambubachi Mela, which draws large numbers of pilgrims. Its religious importance, location and cultural traditions make it a key stop for visitors exploring Guwahati.

Moreover, Assam Tourism includes Kamakhya in its major tourism circuits. The department also offers itineraries that combine the temple with destinations such as Hajo, Sualkuchi, Sivasagar and Majuli.

Kaziranga offers Assam’s iconic wildlife

Kaziranga National Park remains one of the most recognised Assam tourist places. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its one-horned rhinoceros and supports a wide range of wildlife.

The park also recorded its highest-ever tourism footfall during the 2025-26 financial year. Sarma said 4.68 lakh visitors entered Kaziranga during the year, an increase of more than 15 per cent from the previous year. Foreign visitor numbers also rose sharply.

Therefore, Kaziranga remains central to Assam’s effort to link conservation with tourism and local economic activity.

Manas adds a different wildlife experience

Manas National Park gives Assam tourist places another strong wildlife destination. Located near the Bhutan-Himalayan foothills, the park is known for its forests, rivers and diverse wildlife. Assam Tourism describes it as one of the state’s important natural attractions.

The destination has also received renewed attention in the state’s tourism plans. In February 2026, Assam signed an agreement with the Airports Authority of India for a pre-feasibility study of a greenfield airport at Manas, with the government linking the proposal to connectivity and wildlife tourism.

In addition, the state has proposed a five-star hotel at Manas under its 2026-27 tourism plans.

Majuli showcases Assam’s living culture

Majuli offers a very different experience. The river island is closely associated with Assam’s Vaishnavite traditions and satras, which preserve dance, drama, music and other cultural practices.

Assam Tourism includes Majuli in a dedicated circuit linking it with Kaziranga and Sivasagar. The itinerary highlights satras, traditional villages, river travel and local crafts.

Meanwhile, Majuli is among the locations identified for a proposed greenfield airport pre-feasibility study. The government has said better connectivity could support tourism and local economic activity.

Sivasagar preserves Assam’s historic legacy

Sivasagar completes the five-destination picture with its strong connection to the Ahom era. The historic city features monuments including Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Kareng Ghar and Sivadol.

Its significance has grown further after Charaideo Maidams received UNESCO World Heritage recognition, strengthening Assam’s wider historical tourism appeal. The state tourism department now presents cultural and heritage destinations alongside wildlife and pilgrimage sites.

Overall, these five Assam tourist places reflect the state’s broad tourism offering. Kamakhya represents faith, Kaziranga and Manas showcase wildlife, Majuli highlights living culture, while Sivasagar connects visitors with Assam’s historic past. Together, they underline why the state is placing tourism at the centre of its current development strategy.
