Meg Lanning: A Pioneer and Icon of Women’s Cricket

Meghann Moira Lanning AM (born 25 March 1992) is an Australian cricketer who formerly captained the national women’s team. Lanning has been a member of seven successful world championship campaigns, winning two Women’s Cricket World Cup and five ICC Women’s World Twenty20 titles. She holds the record for the most Women’s One Day International centuries and is the first Australian to score 2,000 Twenty20 International runs.

Lanning was born in Singapore to Australian parents and moved to Melbourne, Australia, when she was a toddler. She began playing cricket at the age of five and made her debut for the Victorian state team at the age of 17. Lanning was selected for the Australian women’s cricket team in 2010 at the age of 18. She made her debut against England in an ODI match and scored an unbeaten century in her second match.

Lanning was appointed captain of the Australian women’s cricket team in 2014 at the age of 21. She is the youngest person to ever captain the Australian national team. Lanning has led Australia to two Women’s Cricket World Cups (2014 and 2022) and five ICC Women’s World Twenty20 titles (2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2023). She is the most successful captain in women’s cricket history.

Lanning is a right-handed opening batter and a part-time right-arm off-spin bowler. She is known for her elegant strokes and her ability to time the ball well. Lanning is also a very good fielder and has a strong leadership presence on the field.

Lanning has won numerous awards for her cricket achievements, including:

  • ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year (2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022)
  • Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World (2014 and 2023)
  • Australian Cricketer of the Year (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022)
  • Belinda Clark Award (2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022)

Lanning is also a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division, awarded in 2022 for her services to cricket.
