Centre Announces Fisheries Boost for Northeast
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh chaired a regional review meeting in Aizawl on Monday to review fisheries, dairy, and livestock development across Northeast India.
Representatives from all eight northeastern states attended the meeting along with senior officials from the National Dairy Development Board and the National Fisheries Development Board.
During the review, the Union Minister announced Centre approval for a ₹50-crore fish marketing centre in Mizoram. He said the project would strengthen fish trade and improve market access for local fish farmers.
Four Aquaparks Planned for Northeast India
The minister also announced that four out of India’s eleven proposed integrated Aquaparks would come up in Northeast India.
He urged the Mizoram government to speed up land-related formalities and submit a Detailed Project Report for establishing an Aquapark in the state.
Singh referred to the recent inauguration of India’s first integrated Aquapark at Ziro and said similar projects would improve aquaculture infrastructure in the Northeast.
Fish Production Nearly Doubles in Northeast
According to the Union Minister, fish production in Northeast India nearly doubled over the past decade.
Production increased from 3.78 lakh tonnes in 2014 to 7.05 lakh tonnes in 2025 due to schemes such as the Blue Revolution, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund, and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
Between 2014 and 2025, the Centre allocated ₹2,228 crore for fisheries development in the Northeast.
Assam received the highest allocation of ₹614.11 crore, followed by Tripura and Mizoram.
The minister also announced plans to modernise the National Fisheries Development Board facility in Assam and digitally onboard fish farmers in the region.
Mission Amrit Sarovar and Fish Farming Clusters
The Centre plans to develop eight notified fish farming clusters in Northeast India to improve productivity and strengthen local fish supply chains.
Singh said the government is ready to invest ₹200–300 crore in the Northeast under Mission Amrit Sarovar to support fisheries and water resource development.
Officials believe the investment will create employment opportunities and improve income generation for rural communities.
Dairy and Livestock Sector Records Growth
The Union Minister highlighted growth in dairy and livestock production across the Northeast.
He said milk production in the region increased by 37 percent, egg production by 40 percent, and meat production by 15 percent in recent years.
To further improve the sector, the government plans to strengthen dairy cooperatives, expand artificial insemination services, and improve veterinary infrastructure.
The Centre also plans to establish a regional office of the National Dairy Development Board in Guwahati.
The ministry is also working on the development of vaccines against livestock diseases to improve animal health and productivity.
Focus on Self-Reliance and Entrepreneurship
Union Minister of State George Kurian said the ministry is focusing on livelihood generation, women’s empowerment, and entrepreneurship development in Northeast India.
He encouraged northeastern states to become self-reliant by increasing local production and reducing dependence on external supplies.
During the meeting, state representatives discussed achievements and challenges related to infrastructure, youth training, digital deployment, and timely release of central funds.
