The Assam Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 28 welcomed the Assam government’s efforts to strengthen the state’s agarwood sector. BJP spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami stressed that the growing commercial value of agarwood should directly benefit genuine farmers and indigenous growers. He called for a transparent policy framework, clear eligibility rules and fair access to registration, transportation, processing and export opportunities.
The BJP also urged the expansion of value-added products such as agarwood oil, attar and fragrances within Assam. The party said a stronger agarwood industry could create employment and boost rural incomes across the state.

BJP Calls for Grower-Centric Agarwood Policy
The Assam BJP welcomed the state government’s initiative to develop and strengthen the agarwood industry. However, the party stressed that the benefits of the sector must reach farmers who have invested years of labour and resources in cultivation.
BJP Assam Pradesh spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami said there should be no monopoly by any particular group in the agarwood sector. He urged the government to keep the rights and interests of indigenous growers at the centre of the proposed framework.
According to Goswami, generations of farmers and families in Assam have invested their land, money and labour in agarwood cultivation. Despite the industry’s growing commercial potential, he said many genuine growers have not received a proportionate share of its economic value.
He argued that farmers who plant and nurture agarwood trees for years should be among the primary beneficiaries when the trees enter commercial markets.
Demand for Transparent Regulations
Goswami called for a transparent policy framework with clear eligibility criteria for growers and businesses. He said genuine farmers should have fair access to registration, valuation, transportation, processing and export opportunities.
The BJP spokesperson also welcomed government efforts to simplify regulatory procedures related to agarwood plantations, felling, transportation and trade.
He said reducing unnecessary procedural difficulties could encourage more farmers and entrepreneurs to participate in the organised agarwood economy.
Focus on Processing and Exports
The BJP also highlighted the need to develop agarwood-based industries within Assam. Instead of primarily supplying raw materials, the state could expand production of agarwood oil, attar, fragrances and other value-added products.
According to Goswami, greater investment in processing and technology could help Assam emerge as a major agarwood processing and export hub.
He said scientific cultivation, modern technology and improved access to international markets could create significant livelihood opportunities for rural families.
Employment Opportunities in Rural Assam
The BJP said bringing small growers, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders into an organised value chain could generate employment and self-employment opportunities.
Goswami described agarwood as more than a commercial crop, saying it is closely connected with Assam’s rural and indigenous economy.
He also thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the initiative and acknowledged the involvement of Forest Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, Industries Minister Bimal Borah and Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika in discussions with growers, producers and other stakeholders.
