Sarma made the remarks on September 8, the 100th birth anniversary of the singer, composer, lyricist, filmmaker and cultural icon. He said Hazarika’s timeless music and profound words continue to inspire generations.

In a post on X, Sarma said the year-long nationwide celebrations of Hazarika’s life and creations had reaffirmed his enduring legacy. He described him as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra”, whose voice carried Assam’s spirit, stories and dreams far beyond the state.

The Chief Minister was scheduled to attend a special programme organised by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs at Bhupen Hazarika Samanway Tirtha in Guwahati. The event marks the birth centenary of an artiste whose work remains closely linked with Assam’s cultural identity.

A voice that carried Assam beyond its borders

Bhupen Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926, at Sadiya in present-day Tinsukia district. Over a long career, he worked across music, cinema and literature, while his songs often reflected themes of humanity, social concerns and the lives of ordinary people.

His artistic work also reached audiences beyond Assam. His songs and films in multiple Indian languages helped bring the cultural experiences of the Northeast to wider audiences. As a result, his influence is remembered not only as a regional achievement but also as part of India’s wider cultural heritage.

Centenary celebrations underline his lasting legacy

The year-long birth centenary celebrations began last year with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending a special tribute programme in Guwahati. On that occasion, a commemorative ₹100 coin issued by the Reserve Bank of India and a biography titled Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika were released.

The celebrations have included programmes in Assam and other parts of the country. Meanwhile, the centenary observance has brought renewed attention to Hazarika’s music, films, writings and contribution to public life.

The Assam government has also announced plans for a dedicated museum in his memory. The proposed museum is intended to preserve and showcase his life, music, literary works and cultural legacy.

Other national tributes have also marked the occasion. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called Hazarika a towering cultural icon and visionary, noting the place of compassion, harmony and social justice in his compositions. These tributes have added to the wider recognition of an artiste whose career crossed regional and linguistic boundaries.

Bhupen Hazarika’s music remains widely relevant

Hazarika died in Mumbai on November 5, 2011. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2019.

However, his cultural presence has continued through recordings, performances and public tributes. His compositions remain familiar to generations of listeners, while his themes of compassion, unity and social awareness continue to shape discussions around his work.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Hazarika on his 100th birth anniversary. The Prime Minister said the artiste’s voice carried the soul of Assam and the spirit of the Northeast to the entire nation. He also recalled how Hazarika’s music gave expression to the thoughts and feelings of countless people.

The centenary programme also reflects an effort to keep his legacy accessible to younger audiences. Through commemorative events, performances and archival initiatives, institutions are seeking to connect new generations with his creative work.

Bhupen Hazarika legacy continues through generations

The centenary observance has placed Hazarika’s contribution in the national spotlight while keeping Assam at the centre of the celebrations. For the state, his songs remain closely connected with its people, landscape, language and social memory.

Sarma’s description of Hazarika as an emotion reflects that continuing connection. More than a decade after his death, the artiste remains a major cultural reference in Assam and an important figure in India’s musical history.

As the centenary celebrations draw attention to his body of work, the focus remains on preserving and sharing the ideas, music and cultural values that made Bhupen Hazarika a lasting voice of Assam.
