Nagaon bypoll sees strong voter participation

Voting began at 7 am and continued until the scheduled closing time. According to officials, around 76 per cent of the 19.05 lakh electors had voted by 5 pm. ThePrint

However, the final turnout is expected to be higher. Voters who had entered polling stations before the gates closed were allowed to cast their ballots. Therefore, their votes will be included in the final figure after officials complete the process. ThePrint

The Nagaon bypoll covered eight Assembly segments: Jagiroad, Morigaon, Nagaon-Batadraba, Rupahihat, Dhing, Samaguri, Laharighat and Raha. Polling remained largely peaceful throughout the constituency.

Samaguri records highest turnout

Samaguri recorded the highest provisional turnout among the eight segments, at 80.22 per cent by 5 pm. Laharighat followed with 78.88 per cent, while Dhing recorded 77.93 per cent. The New Indian Express

Rupahihat registered 77.67 per cent turnout, followed by Jagiroad at 76.61 per cent. Morigaon recorded 72.84 per cent, while Nagaon-Batadraba saw 72.01 per cent polling.

Raha recorded the lowest turnout among the eight segments, at 70.27 per cent. These figures are also provisional and may change slightly when election authorities complete the compilation and verification process. The New Indian Express

Nagaon bypoll passes without major disruption

Officials said polling remained peaceful, with no major untoward incident reported at any polling station. Minor electronic voting machine glitches were reported at a few booths. ThePrint

Election authorities replaced the affected machines promptly, allowing voting to continue. The constituency had 2,112 polling stations, including auxiliary and model booths, while webcasting arrangements helped officials monitor polling. NorthEast Now

The Nagaon bypoll was held amid strong political competition in Assam. The seat witnessed a triangular contest involving the BJP, Congress and AIUDF, with 15 candidates in the fray. India Today NE

Contest follows a change in political equations

The by-election was necessitated after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Lok Sabha and later successfully contested the Assam Assembly election from Dispur on a BJP ticket. ThePrint

BJP candidate Devashish Sharma, a former IAS officer, contested the bypoll against Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. The three-way contest drew sustained attention during the campaign. The New Indian Express

The campaign also featured political allegations and sharp exchanges among the major parties. However, those claims remained part of the electoral contest and do not determine the final outcome, which will depend on the votes counted.

Nagaon bypoll result awaits October 9 count

With polling complete, attention now shifts to the counting of votes. The results are scheduled to be declared on October 9. The Times of India

The final turnout will provide a clearer picture of voter participation after election officials complete their compilation. Meanwhile, the provisional 76 per cent figure points to substantial participation across the constituency.

The outcome will determine who represents Nagaon in the Lok Sabha and could offer political parties an indication of their support in a closely contested part of Assam. For now, the focus remains on the final turnout figure and the counting process ahead.
