Acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s latest venture, “Ponniyin Selvan II,” has crossed the Rs 200 crore mark at the box office worldwide, according to the production banner Madras Talkies. The period epic feature film released on April 28, simultaneously in Tamil and in dubbed versions in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam.

The second part of the two-part film adaptation of the popular Tamil novel “Ponniyin Selvan” by Kalki Krishnamurthy, “Ponniyin Selvan II,” has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film boasts of an ensemble cast, including Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and many others.

The story of “Ponniyin Selvan II” revolves around the Chola dynasty and their struggles for power in the 10th century. The film’s production design, visual effects, and cinematography have received much praise from critics for their authenticity and attention to detail.

The film’s success has come as a huge relief to the Indian film industry, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Theatres across the country were closed for several months, and even after they were reopened, they were operating at reduced capacity, making it difficult for films to make a profit.

However, “Ponniyin Selvan II” has managed to buck the trend and has proved to be a blockbuster hit. The film’s strong performances, engaging storyline, and stunning visuals have struck a chord with audiences, leading to its impressive box office collections.

The film’s director, Mani Ratnam, is a renowned filmmaker in the Indian film industry and has won several national and international awards for his work. He is known for his unique storytelling style and has directed several critically acclaimed films, including “Roja,” “Bombay,” “Guru,” and “Raavan.”

Madras Talkies, the production banner behind “Ponniyin Selvan II,” is owned by Mani Ratnam and his wife, actress Suhasini Maniratnam. The banner has produced several successful films over the years, including “Dil Se,” “Alaipayuthey,” and “O Kadhal Kanmani.”

The success of “Ponniyin Selvan II” is expected to inspire other filmmakers to release their films in theatres, which would give a much-needed boost to the Indian film industry. It is also expected to pave the way for more high-budget period films, which have become increasingly popular in recent years.
