National Technology Day is celebrated every year in India on May 11 to commemorate the successful nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran in 1998. The day also honors the contributions of Indian scientists, engineers, and technologists toward the country’s development in science and technology.

It was declared National Technology Day by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999. The Pokhran nuclear tests were conducted under his leadership and India became a nuclear-capable nation. On this day, various technological initiatives and projects are announced by the government, and this year’s theme is “School to Startups- Igniting Young Minds to Innovate.”

The celebration will be marked by inaugurating a program at Pragati Maidan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will also dedicate multiple scientific projects worth over Rs 5,800 crore to the nation. Additionally, several other significant technological milestones have also been achieved on May 11, including the final test fire of the Trishul missile, the first indigenous aircraft “Hansa-3” being test flown at Bangalore, and the introduction of programs such as the Startup India initiative and the Atal Innovation Mission.

National Technology Day 2023 will feature a program and celebrations that place a special emphasis on the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM). The AIM Pavilion will be a highlight of this year’s theme and will display a variety of innovative projects, as well as offer visitors the chance to participate in live tinkering sessions, engage in hands-on tinkering activities, and observe exceptional innovations and products from startups.
